I've seen the videos, and they're something.  These jets come in over the desert, maybe half a wingspan above the ground, then  pull up and go vertical.

Seems like ground effect would help keep your plane from drifting down and hitting, assuming you had flat ground beneath you.  I don't remember feeling this in AH, how well is ground effect modeled at speed?  Or are there people here who have flown fast at less then a wingspan off the ground that have felt the GE repelling them?

This discussion reminds me that Chuck Yeager had some interesting observations about ground effect while he was in traing at Tonopah (sp?). While flying the P39 Airacobra he routinely left prop marks in the dirt while trying out the ground effect. The "right stuff", indeed.

IIRC he also trimmed a friend's tree top with a P-39.

I also remember a conversation i had with a USAF general officer who said Yeager is full of as much crap as is possible for a man of his size
