6000+ Marines died in battle on IwoJima over the course of a thirty day battle. 26000+ Marines were wounded. 22000 Japanese soldiers were killed. Less than 200 Japanese soldiers were captured, less than 30 surrendered.
Japanese Kamakazi, or divine wind damaged over 200 USNavy vessels and sank over 50 USNavy vessels, in all killing or wounding over 10000 American servicemen.
In the space of one hour over 5000 civilians, mostly Amercian but probably including casualties from every industrialized nation on earth, were murdered on September 11, 2001. Thats approximately 1/12 of the total loss of life incurred on the American Military in the ten years spent trying to preserve South Vietnam.
