I keep seeing skins with huges rivet

Have any of you skinner tried to scale up your rivet to see what would be their real size ?

Do you really think a rivet is 5 cm diameter ?

how big do u think they are lol. on real plane bout the size of your finger nail so whats so big about these?

I'm sure my P-38L would be guilty of that. Most of the rivets on my P-38 are 1x1 pixel, and the larger ones are either 4x4 or 9x9 (i forget which).. because the real 38 did have some tiny rivets and some very large ones. They LOOK bigger than they are because of a "metal denting" effect I put on them, so the rivet looks a lit bigger than they are because of the shading around them from the effect of the metal being deformed. Beleive it or not, I DID get the rivet sizes I used from a sheet that someone posted here with an awesome P-38 rivet reference diagram.

I questioned myself a half dozen times on doing it that way, but it was different, and I thought the effect was neat =) Once I get some time to do another 38 (and the 51 when that gets released) I'll probably tone it down some, but not completely. ;-)

I tend to agree that rivets look too large on these skins, but at 1024X1024 a 1X1 rivet IS too large. let me know when you figure out how to make them smaller than a pixel

Well exactly like when I'm measuring a mecanical part using sub-pixel metrology

I'll need a bit of time to translate one of my article on this subject

what about instead of using a punctiform rivet don't you use a [3][3] array of pixel ?.

Sorry straffo, I don't understand.

I think the rivets can be toned down some, via opacity and darkness/lightness manipulation, but I don't see how their SIZE can be reduced bleow 1X1.

Well sorry I was not clear , you cannot have a pixel size inferior to 1.

But you can cheat and give it the viewer the impression it's less than one pixel
Just by doing a sort of antialias.

Just compare this :

0 0 0
0 1 0
0 0 0

to this

1 0 1
0 1 0
1 0 1

has anyone tried "cheating" and spacing them 2x apart, meaning 1 for every 2 in real life?

might give the illusion of smaller

once i start on my skin i'll try it.

i hate some of the rivit work on some skins .. some of mine included..
i am comming to the conclusion that rivits should be just hinted at
