Panel lines and rivets, are only a small part of the overall skin.
Panel lines that look clear, or rivets that look bumpy is important too, but IMHO, seeing jagged, 'staired' panel lines is much more upsetting than AAd lines that might look a lil' bit thick. (and such thickness, can be retouched by visual cosmetics in later stages of the skinning, but however, jagged lines cannot be hidden).
Waffle's default 190 skins were one of the best skin works I've ever seen, but the only, single thing that was a bit erratic, was that he also used the non AAd pen tool to depict panel lines.
