Alrighty...I need a new WinXP disk.
« on: May 12, 2005, 09:56:44 PM »
Man...I had JUST waded through 4.5 hours of problems on my newly built computer, got the DVD/CD-ROM working, slipped my XP CD in, leaned back to relax as Setup started.......and listened as the drive sounded like a jet engine with a boulder stuck in it. Turns out my CD exploded into over 20 pieces and took the insides of my drive with it.

Questions are:

Reccomended DVD/CD-ROM drive that won't keep getting faster and faster until it malfunctions on a BRAND NEW, untouched computer?

Is there anywhere I can get an XP full install disk (Prof. preferred, but Home will do) cheaper than what it is at newegg?

Doesn't that story make you wanna break out and sue them Ben-Q bastages? :D

I had that happen to me once on a computer I built, was installing Wing Commander II on it after adding a new CD-R, a VoodooIII video card, and some other odds and ends.  CD exploded inside the drive.  I tried to blame it on the new drive, they said it was probably a faulty CD, that they develop cracks along the inner ring.  Banged my head against the wall for a half hour or so, then life went on.  :)

Yes, but that software wasn't $180 to replace. Was it?

I see it on newegg for ~$120 for the Prof. edition and ~$60 for Home. Trying to find it cheaper where someone else has bought something before. That way I know it isn't just some guy feeding off credit card numbers in his basement. :lol

I've had good luck with sony dvd burners so that's what I've been using as my main drives.  You can get various brands of dual layer dvd burners as cheap as $60, and they shouldn't go boom.  There is a certain level of quality required to burn a dvd, so it seems reasonable to expect that a dvd burner ought to work just fine as a regular drive.  I have the sony because I've had good luck with them, no other reason.  Well, it wasn't much more expensive than the cheapo ones either.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.

Sorry, I guess I should have been more direct.  The reason I posted the little story above was to point out that (for awhile at least), this happened to alot of people.  It was blamed on the CD's themselves, a defect in the material.  I have no idea how that was ever resolved, if it was.  But Microsoft will gladly replace your CD as long as you have the Product ID code.  You bought it, you have the right to install and use that software forever.  You will probably just pay shipping on it.  Unless they have totally changed their policies that is.
