a recent story in newsweek that said the koran was flushed down the toilet in git-mo. that story set off riots that killed 15 people in afganistan. newsweek now says that the story "may" be wrong.

my question is , should the people at newsweek that were responsable for that false story that killed 15 people be charged with a criminal offense?

If someone yells fire in a crowded theater and incites a riot, they are punished.

What happens if the person yells fire because they had a reasonable belief that there actually WAS a fire, but it turned out to be false?

What if that person was a fireman who's job it was to know whether or not there was a fire?

Why would they be held responsible for? All they have to do is retract the story.

Newsweek didn't tell some idiots to go off the handle and murder people.

What if newsweek posted a story that a bible was flushed down the toilet and it turned out to be wrong? No big deal.

If people are gonna be fanatical nutz, that's not Newsweek's problem.

What if a bus was going to run into a crowded theatre?  Would it be okay then to yell 'Tire'?

Newsweek is protected by the 1st.

All they have to do is say, "sorry".

Even if nobody cares, i must admit that i'm with Nuke on this one...

And John, a newspaper thinking that it "may" be wrong isn't the same as, i quote :

should the people at newsweek that were responsable for that false story

Some mistakes are more significant than others--Saying a non-Muslim did ANYthing untoward with a Koran is throwing gasoline on a fire---They were SOOOo wanting to dig up some more dirt on US military and Rumsfeld that they went with a rumor---now 15 peeps are dead, and many more on the way...and THESE are the people who HAD the Blue dress story...,and decided not to run it (Drudge made his career off that very same story--he didnt dig it up, just saw no reason not to print a verified story)
