Need a movie synopsis of The Deer hunter

I've seen bits and pieces of this movie.  I need someone to tell me the whole story.

Heres what I have seen:
The big wedding at the beginning of the movie
The soldiers playing russian roulette in the VC prison
Robert Deniro returning home

What happens to Deniros other friends?

bunch of friends get drunk , join army, get sent to nam, some get killed , some don't , the one that don't get killed come back and are all f'up because of stress caused by war.

typical anti-war/anti-miltary movie of that period, you will love it as it supports your viewpoint.

After a botched assasination attempt of a Senator to impress a girl, Deniro gains 80 lbs and starts a boxing career.  

After ascending the ranks to become heavyweight champion, Deniro retires from boxing and ages to become the head of a crime family.

One son gets machine gunned at a toll booth and his other son becomes the Don. His daughter gets interested in marrying a male nurse instead of the man Deniro wants here to marry; a wealthy investor who carves a gazebo out of a single piece of wood.

Deniro rethinks his life of crime, gets some counselling and eventually gets sent to prison, but he feels much better as he finally comes to grip with the childhood trauma of seeing his father gunned down in a restaurant.

You forgot the part where he decides to drive a taxi and live the life of a simple man.

All this was done while he was udnercover for the CIA. After retirement, he terrorizes his  daughter's soon to be fiance when he visits.

so when did he go crazy and stalk that lovely family in the houseboat?  Was that after Deniro returned from Vietnam or after he found Christopher Walken playing Russian Roulette?

After the Christopher Walken thing.

Walken dealt with the stress by becoming a president of Zoran Industries and trying to throw British agents off of blimps.  After that he tried to build an unneeded power plant and befriended a small malformed man living in the zoo.

Oh, and the terror of the daughter's fiance was covered with the handcarved gazebo reference.

You must be wrong with that one. Al Pacino was his son who took over the family only to go blind and drive a car illegally.
