Uninstalling Dx
« on: November 22, 2000, 08:29:00 AM »
I found out my son took us from Dx7a to Dx8 very recently.  For the most part it seems to work fine.

However, I have the need to go back to Dx7a.  I cannot try to reinstall an older version of Dx (tried and it won't let me) and I can't figure out how to uninstall Dx so I can install 7a again.  I've heard this can be a nightmare and I don't find a lot of information on the MS search site.  Has anyone ever gone back a version on Dx or uninstalled Dx and if so can you give me some clues?

Thanks
Fury

IV done it fury here goes!

Delete direct x folder
reboot in safe mode.
in FIND type "direct"
delete ALL files that are obviously DX related..DONT DELETE IF YOUR NOT SURE (catastrophic)
REBOOT into SAFE mode
run "regedit" in  RUN and hit enter
go to search and type "direct" again
again, delete all everything that is FOR SURE DX related.
REBOOT
ok now install DX7
the run DXDIAG.exe and make sure there are no conflicts.
if there are, start over
It is pretty much a losing battle
need some luck.

... alternatively check out in the "Hardware" forum - someone's already been there and posted detailed instructions of "copy'n'paste"...
