A Swiss Halifax
« on: May 17, 2005, 01:30:37 PM »
Hello everyone!  :)

In the one of last year's issues of Aeroplane magazine I've found a small photo of late mark HP Halifax bomber wearing Swiss AF markings. Unfortunately I don't have access to this photo at the moment, but maybe somebody will be able to throw some more light on this subject? Cheers!

Regards,

donal :)

Wild guess, but maybe a combat plane that got lost or damaged & force landed in Swiss territory.  I've seen a web site full of photos of Allied A/C in Portugese markings for that reason & have read a book by a pilot who was capurted (and later escaped from) by the Swiss & kept prisoner there.

Yep.  Lots of 17s, 24s, Mustangs, Mossies, Lancs etc that dropped into Switzerland.

Sweden got quite a few dropping in there as well.  The USAFM B17 Shoo Shoo Baby was one of those that was interned in Sweden.

As for Portugal.  During the early part of the war, P39s and 38s ferried out of England to North Africa.  Some got interned in Portugal.

Jack Ilfrey of 1st and 20th FG fame, was one of those guys, but while showing the cockpit to a Portuguese pilot, he gunned the engines, blew the guy off the wing of his 38 and got away.
