I had an Abit cheap **** MB  and AMD chip and I could never get the damn Motherboard to detect the chip as the right speed either. Abit is junk, you might as well have gone with ECS. As bad as people claim they are I have set up a bunch of cheapy systems for friends with their Motherboards and everyone works great. Including my main work system a AMD 64 3400plus...

am I oversimplifying this or couldn't you just pop off the heat-sink and see what's written on the processor?

Well, yes you can... but then you have to reapply the heat sink compound.

Sounds to me like the only gripe you got was a motherboard that wasnt completely compatible with your chip.

You misspelled 'configured for'.

Just stand outside his shop and tell every person entering the store your story. You may not get your money back, but you will cost him enough business that he won't make any money off of ripping you off.

StarOfAfrica, search Usenet, there are plenty of people who's CPU Z reading changes when they adjust the FSB.  Nothing magical about it.

LOL chair!   i know a bit more than i can adiquitly explain!  there in lies the problem!  (yes im typing and spelling impared)

Im an AMD guy (no not a fan boi) i like AMD and prefer AMD. ive built several systems based on AMD and when doing my searches (at that time) the only chip worthits money was the 2500 for th OC'ing ablility!

Mine runs at 2.3G   and the FSB is at 200.  ( i could go higher but im happy)

Either Loser got a crappy chip from the get go or they guy ripped him off.  Only way we'll ever know is if he give us the full chip (CPU) code to tell what model (the CPU) really is!

but ill let the guy stuck in the chair Keep talking!

BTW Chair not nice to run your mouth at some one trying to help another guy out! a guy i met and know!(the con 2003)

Or neither, as I had explained the flavors of the 2600+ and the inadequacies of particular BIOS revisions.

CPU-Z should still detect what the chip is, regardless of the motherboard.

It doesn't, it reports what the BIOS is telling it.

I've got an Asus A8NX, I had an old Athlon 2400 that the board recognised. That cpu started playing up, I got a new 2800, the BIOS recognised it as a 2000 iirc, CPU-Z did the same.

Only after downloading the latest BIOS update did the board recognise the CPU correctly (at which point CPU-Z did as well)

1.  Bad advice is worse then no help.
2. You having met him in person doesn't improve your comprehension of the problem.

How many people need to share their personal experience with FSB modified CPU speeds before you stop 'helping' with bad info?

Oo oo me me!  When I built my old 3000+ system a couple of years ago it wouldn't recognize as a 3000+ until I had to switch my jumper cables.  After I switched it to 166 multiplier.. BAM! It worked.
