Can I play with this system?
« on: May 19, 2005, 06:49:16 PM »
New here, used to be with the 367th in rr on AW, a long time ago.  I'm about to get a cable modem and was wondering if I can get on with this system running windows xp:

Dell Dimension 4550:  Pentium 4 @2.4 ghz, 256 ddr sdram @ 266
64MB GeForce 4 MX
60 gig Ultra ATA/100 Hard drive, 7200
Soundblaster live.

I know the ram is a bit light, but one can hope.  Thanks, dhaus

Id say yes u can play but will be low fps. ur hurtting in Ram and video card.  you need 256 more ram atleast if not enough to make your total to 1 gig. Video id say your system would benifit most from a ATI 9800 pro or a Nvidia 6600 GT, anything higher
on either card would be over kill for your CPU.

I have access to a Radeon 9600 XT video card, and I'm sure dell would be happy to sell me another 512 of ram, lol.  If the Radeon would work out, I might just give this a go.

Ok, I'm looking at memory.  I'm currently running 256 ddr ram at 266 with the P4 2.4 and a 533 front side bus.  I believe I can install 512 ddr ram at 366 on this system.  If I do, can I run both the 256 @ 266 and the 512 @ 366 side by side?  (New Egg has viking 512 sticks for about $40.00)  Or would I be better off getting  a stick of 512 @ 266 and run that side by side with the 256?  Or am I stuck with buying all new and removing the old 256 stick?  Sorry for the questions, but I know enough about computers to get into a whole lot of  trouble, lol.  And thanks for the help so far - there is hope!  -dhaus

Get some more ram and a better vid card if you can manage it and it should be fine - why don't you just download and try?

dhaus ..... Hello, I also was in AW RR PAC . cpid in AW
was  `Cuca's Squad`CHKRS ...... CZ country  also with the SeaSerpents Squad right up, and  into the very  night AOL ( Tards) killed it .

I would take a look around at other stores for the ram .
It may very well be cheaper to shop else where . Try looking for ram at "  http://www.pricewatch.com[/url]
For the price you will have to pay Dell  for another stick of 256  ram at Dell, you could prolly purchase 2 sticks of 512 ram for a gig of ram and if your system will support it , faster than 266 stuff.
As for the soundblaster card , I would try setting the acceleration at " standard"  in the propertys of the soundcard .

Whels is a very savy player of AcesHigh ! and is offering rock solid advice !  ( He is also a very cool  pilot and alot of fun to be around in the game . )
You will need a different video card . My I sudjest you also take a look at the BFG Tech.  Nvidia GeForce FX 5700 Ultra 128 MB card.....      http://www.bfgtech.com/
take a look at that cards  clock and core speeds  ( it's fast ) ...
and priced very reasonable for what it offers in "The Bang for the Buck " ......

I hope some of this helps ......

I wonder........ dhaus ? , by any chance, .........would you know how to email `Cuca` ? , When AirWarrior was killed , he moved to WW2 OL and over the years I have not been able to get a hold of a good email addy for him .....

    Regards ....

what windows are you running? 98, ME, XP?
98 and ME dont like 1 gig of mem so 512 would be fine, XP will work better with 512 to a gig.

you can mix speeds of mem but they all will only run @ the slowest memory stick speed. your MB requires PC2700 ram.
with the 266mhz stick in thier your actually running slower then
the machine is capable of.  from alittle looking around, looks like Dell might be proprietary. so best get Dell recommended ram to be sure of compatability.  remember Quality over Quantity for ram.

i always buy direct from crucial, but i also love mushkin, corsair, and kingston. here is what u need from crucial.

Video cards.

9600 or 9800 would fit your cpu fine. i love my BFG.
128 meg car will work fine, but get a 256 if u can.

this would be good little card for your machine.

Thanks!

Whels, I think I'll stick with the 9600 xt for now - but will get at least the 512/366 ram.  I may try side by side with the 256/266 and then alone just to see before trying a gig of the 366.  (Trying to pinch some pennies here.  16 yo daughter wants a car, college, etc. lol.)

Checkers:  I don't know how to get in touch with Cuca, although I seem to remember the name.  Flew aw mainly in euro with scud, phant and others of the 367th.  Loved the 38 and 109 in AW.  Scud is in AH, but don't know his name here, yet.  After I get the cable modem up and AOHell weeded out of my system, I'll get on and give it a try.  Thanks again.
