Here's an AAR of my squaddie, from the 5th Annual Korean Airforce CGS(Chief of General's Staff) Cup Flight Simulation Games.
This is a non-profit contest where civilian contestants participating in Aces High, IL2Sturmovik, and other variety of games duke it out in 1vs1 fights, and is officially sponsored by the Korean Air Force. Good Airforce PR material, I guess
Hey all, it's me, Xwing.
The CGS Cup Tournament began today, and like last year I tried my luck against some of the best virtual pilots of Korea. Last year, and the year before that, I dropped out from the first round.. so it was a bit hard for me to shape up my confidence.
Besides, I had only days to train after months of absence from the MA, so training with some of the squaddies in H2H was all I could count on (my gratitude to Sanjini for helping me out. ) So, I hesitated a bit before signing in... and made a last minute decision to try again this year.
As expected, I met kaoria and towilco too.. and also Skidrow - this is the first time I saw him in person. Most unexpected was the meeting with the Airforce officers whom I've served under, during my years in the military.
The roster was up, and the good news was, I didn't have to meet kaoria in the first round. However, the bad news was...
Skidrow.. was my first opponent.
(Oh my god..)
To tell you the results first, I've dropped out on the first round.. again.
The fight was set 1vs1, P-51D vs P-51D. At the first merge I raised my nose to go into an elongated loop, but Skidrow went into a left flat turn.
To tell you the truth, this is all I can remember. What happened next was a hectic fight to overshoot each other, raising and lowering flaps every second, kicking rudders, moving the stick...
During the course of action I fell into a spin, but recovered from it promptly. This was when both Skid and I were totally commited, and was trying to scissor each other around. The speed was already under 150mph, and the flaps were going up and down between 3~4 nothces. At some point, it almost seemed like Skid's P-51D was just floating in the air.
Naturally, the alt was very low too. Lucky for me, I had about five chances to shoot, but none of it wasn't a clear chance. Maybe just enough to get a short snapshot in.
I hit him about twice on the wings and the fuselage, but he didn't look like was damaged. During the scissors I've also received a few hits, but nothing serious.
However, shortly after, during a few more scissors, I was able to put a shot in, and Skidrow's P-51D started dragging smoke.
"Yes!!" I shouted to myself.
I was totally commited to the choice, and Skid went into a desparate overshoot attempt..my speed was only about 100mph and yet, he was still slower than me.
So, I figured, "instead of risking too much, why not lift out of the way for a while and come back down?"
This proved to be a fatal mistake.
I slammed in the throttle. Maybe the throttle system was a lot more sensitive than I was used to at home.. or maybe I was too nervous.
More likely, was that I was so used to the P-38 without any torque, that I forgot about the torque factor completely. As I suddenly pushed the throttle max forward at that extremely low speed, the P-51 felt the torque and abruptly slouched to one side. And then BAM! I spinned. Only 1000ft of alt.. no room to recover. All I could was manage a ditch on the shorelines.
When I asked Skid later, how serious his damage was, he told me that he had not only engine oil leak, but also pilot wound. If I was a little bit more patient, I might have won.
But alas, one mistake proved just too fatal.
After the first round, Skidrow faced kaoria in the semi-finals, who shot down towilco on the first turn of the merge(wow!).
After a few passes kaoria lost an aielron to Skidrow, and wasn't able to outmanneuver Skid. Skid one that round too.
I saw Skidrow going to the finals, but I had to return home after a quick lunch, so I'm pretty curious about what the results are. If Skid won again, then that's two years straight I've lost at the first round by meeting the champ-to-be. Well, maybe it's a good excuse.
Heh, try see if IL-2 planes enter spin due to sudden full throttle at low speeds..
