Alabama congressman finds Bill Maher show near 'treasonous'

RAW STORY

Excerpted from the Associated Press via the (information-restricted) Alabama.com.

An Alabama congressman says comedian Bill Maher's comment that the U.S. military has already recruited all the "low-lying fruit" is possibly treasonous and at least grounds to cancel the HBO show.

Republican Rep. Spencer Bachus takes issue with remarks on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," first aired May 13, in which Maher points out the Army missed its recruiting goal by 42 percent in April.

"More people joined the Michael Jackson fan club," Maher said in giving a comic twist to his commentary. "We've done picked all the low-lying Lynndie England fruit, and now we need warm bodies."

"I think it borders on treason," Bachus said. "In treason, one definition is to undermine the effort or national security of our country."

Maher defended his support for the American armed forces.

"Anyone who knows anything about my views and has watched my show knows that I have nothing but the highest regard for the men and women serving this country around the world," Maher said in the statement.

"I don't want him prosecuted," Bachus said. "I want him off the air."

lazs, you gotta admit that his line "more people joined Michael Jackson's fan club than joined the Army" was pretty funny.

The numbers are a *****.  You can only run stop-loss for so long until the negatives outweight the benefits. Then you need fresh warm bodies.  I've said it before -- nobody may want a draft (repub or demo) but the numbers have to add up to avoid one. Bill Maher isn't saying anything that dozens of others aren't already pointing out regularly these days, from the DoD, to think tanks, to pundits to the local media.

I wonder how many of Rep. Spencer Bachus' immediate next of kin are wearing the unifrom these days (not that there appears to be a strong family history of military service to follow)? Hey, doesn't the CiC have two military age daughters?

[And, we're at a point where we likely need an expanded military - not just the current size -- with a focus on grunts]

It is impossible for a statement to be an act of treason, unless the statement divulges privilaged information that could jeapordise national security.  Bachus is a twit.  If what Mr. Mahr said was bordering on treason, or some new definition of treason, we are all in big trouble.

Actually I think she said...

"So this is how liberty dies. To thunderous applause."

Couldnt even begin to tell you what his views are on the military as I can watch enough of his show to get to that point before I wan to reach through the screen, grab him by his throat, and squeeze the seeds out of his adams apple.

Cant stand even to look at him anymore. He's the type of guy you just know wa a little brat growing up. You know the type.
the kind of kid you just wanna reach across and back slap them. And sometimes just "because"

Coudlnt say he was treasonous though. He has his free speach and as far as Im concerned he can use it to show just how much of an A-hole he is any time he wants.

Wish I could though. I sure as hell woudlnt mind sending him on another
"Man without a country" type journey
