An interesting theory just hit me....
« on: May 25, 2005, 03:12:22 AM »
Alright, could it be that altitude is measured wrong in AH?

This is how I figured it. In WW2OL it took me a good 10 mins to climb up to 3k. From that alt every building below me looked no bigger than rat droppings, evil trees were as small as chopped peas and my plane was slicing through the clouds.

In AH it takes a guy an average of two minutes to get to 3k and treetops seem like they are at arms length and clouds are lightyears away.

I went on IL-2FB, LOMAC, Pacific fighters, wings over vietnam, combat flight sim 3 and it looked like 3k was outerspace. In AH anything below 5k is chickenfeed.

If alt is indeed wrong in AH it would certainly explain the 200foot trees.

Am I just spewing poo here?

Hahem ... were you flying a H75 or a 109 in wwiiol ?

Cause it's the metric system in this planes ;)

3k meter != 3k feet

What Straffo said. LW planes like the 110 would be in metric system.

Yeah, 3K meters = almost 10K feet (Master Converter sez: 9843 ;))

3K = 3,ooo feet on an altimeter in AH. Even if it were 3K meters/yards that is still slow for anything but a heavily laden bomber, a C47 or a  P-47.. ...

"In WW2OL it took me a good 10 mins to climb up to 3k"

Try inverted next time it should only take about 30 seconds at most! :)

But 10 minutes to 3K in WWIIO? That's a joke right? Was your gear still down? Did you have your throttle moved forward at all?  Did you mean 30K and not 3K?  ;)

Spare yourself some frustration and simply don't use WWIIO as your measurement stick for reality. Just as AH is not the place to look for serious ground warfare. Enjoy WWIIO for it's "flavour" and immersion - if you're able to ignore some really stupendous "issues" such as bombs "timing out" if dropped from higher than 3K and no stress model so heavilly laden bombers do the loopety-loop over AB's performing spectacular stunts of pure airquake.   I'm sure the fan bois will link this topic over there and they'll spew about it and doctor "developer" and the hatchet man will scoff and maintain that WWIIO's FM is the still the mostest and bestest (well, after they fixed the HELO-110, removed the THIRD wing from the 109, performed uncountable audits on the aircraft FM's because of obvious problems, etc etc)

From takeoff to 3K would take most WWIIO fighters about 3 minutes tops. And at 3K feet you're still pretty darn close to the ground so things should look large still.  Grown trees in RL are about 75-200 ft tall.  Unless you're used to looking at relatively young growth in a 20,30 or 50 year old subdivision.
Where I'm from if it's under 100 ft tall it's still a sappling and never had the chance for Daniel Boon to carve his name on it it .  ;)

What ever your clime rate indicator says in any of those games will be how long it takes to get to alt. like 2 roc will take 1 1/2 min to get to 3k.
You are most likely geting the metric system mixed up

If we cant use external views in the AH Main Arena, I doubt the altitude measurement is wrong.

HiTech's not that type of guy, In my opinion.

-Paul

Actually, now that I recall, it could be possible that someone whined about the altitude being correct and HiTech had to go and change it... with this board, ya just never know.
