NOT a funny joke:

WIDEFIELD, Colo. - High school yearbooks were recalled so that administrators could black out a joke caption under one student's picture: "most likely to assassinate     President Bush."

Mesa Ridge High School officials recalled about 100 yearbooks earlier this month and had staffers use markers to obscure the words in them and in the still-undistributed copies.     The Secret Service even launched an investigation.

"They kind of ruined our yearbook," said Christina Tredway, who just graduated from the school just south of Colorado Springs. Most students thought the blacking-out was a bad idea since the caption obviously was a joke, she said.

Widefield School District officials called the caption a prank that wasn't caught before the yearbooks were printed, and district spokesman James Drew said future yearbooks will be triple-checked before printing.

Lon Garner, special agent in charge of the Secret Service's Denver District, said the agency would look into the incident because all threats against the president must be investigated.

"That's our mission," he said. "That's what we do."

There were several other joke captions in the book, including "most likely to forget his gown at graduation." Names of those involved were not released.
in bold... what dumb **** students are these? and who the he11 is teaching them?

OMG hE is teh terrrorist!!!!!!!!!

Not terribly great judgement for the teen, but the reaction seems overblown.  I keep forgetting that it's 'Freedom of popular speech'.  If there's no real threat, then... meh.  Wait, I can see the followup response:

OMFG let teh l337 kid5 pretend to ki11z peeps

maybe it is ok to let them put in a caption "most likely to kill his parents" or "most likely to rape and murder small children"

makes sense to me

if they make this a national news supreme court issue it is not overblown in my opinion

73, take a chill pill.  Didn't you do anything dumb when you were a kid?  I know I did.

The SS knows the Pres isn't in any danger, they just have to make a big showing and go through the motions.
Do not attribute to malice what can be easily explained by incompetence, fear, ignorance or stupidity, because there are millions more garden variety idiots walking around in the world than there are blackhearted Machiavellis.

maybe we should find him a different job.  it seems to me that "what we do" doesn't need to be done.

the kid never said he was going to kill the president. (at least the story doesn't say he did).

somebody else joked that they think this kid is the mostly likely kid in his graduating class to do such a thing.  thats not a threat on the president it's a joke on the character of the kid.

we could have saved everybody some time (and us tax-payers some change) if the secret service would have called the kid and asked him.

"do you have plans to kill our embarrassment of a president? no? OK, another case solved.  next."

hell in HS I was voted "most likely to be implicated in a plot to overthrow the gov't".  in 21 years I haven't been involved in any revolutionary activities.

these are high-school joke predictions, not prophecy.

if you don't have a sense of humor, please see about having one installed.

I find it more troubling that the men and women tasked with protecting our President can have the name of their service initialed "SS".

if i put in my signature line:

"Most likely to murder family"

skuzzy would skin me alive, and ban me. no one would find it funny, even though if they were offended they could just choose "do not show signatures" in their board options.

even if i found something like that in my sig funny, i would not put it there because of morality and taste.

it's not about having a sence of humor, it is about respect for your country period.

Joking about presidential assasisnation is not funny and will get you investigated.  Even young people in high school know this, or at least they should, and a small select group of them appear to be getting a good education on the subject currently.

So, just so I anderstand better, your problem is really that who ever wrote that broke the law?  What is the point you are trying to make?

As always in this country, something harmles is going to get blown over proportion and hopefully and up spending a million dollars on it and destroy a kids life by making an example out of nothing.  Really, the person from the secret service that gets this assignemnet should be fired afterwards.  There is really no need for him if this is the only thing he had to do in the past month.

a few points. first is correct, the person / persons who decided this should b printed broke the law.

second, not one person who has posted in this thread cares about threats on our president even if the original intention was in jest. it is not something you "joke" about.

that';s the double standard i'm making. if i were to in my mind jokingly threaten someone here ala mr. black i would be ostracized.

we are all insignificant, and making a possible threat on a bulletin board to someone i dont know is meaningless, yet looked down upon by you all more than the same comment towards the president of the United States.

basically the impression i get from you all is it should be fine to say or print whatever threatening / damaging thing i can about the president, as long as i come out later and say "it was all a joke"

what next? "whoops, sorry i didn't mean to pull that trigger, it was just a joke"

it sickens me to think what children are being taught today, if this community is any representation of society in part or whole.

i am dropping out of the conversation on this, i am too emotionaly irritated, and i dont want to type something to get myself banned or something.

It would be much different if say I had "Most likely to murder family" referring to you in my sig line than if you had it in yours referring to yourself..  It was probably not something the kid said but as others have already stated was a joke applied to the kid in relation to something about his character..

See, I can have that in my sig line and still respect my country at the same time as I make a joke about you..

As skinning you alive would be a murderous act, are you accusing our moderator of murderous intent?
