Movies: have you seen>>>
« on: November 29, 2000, 12:02:00 PM »
I never go see movies when released.  I always wait for the rentals...even then, unless highly recommended I don't bother, you can say I avg. about 1 movie every 2 months.
Reasons being is a countless list of Hollywood squeakes I have about them...but thats another topic.

My question is:

Gladiator?  Worth renting?

Patriot? Worth it?

Just watched U571, good flick, as long as you keep in mind that its not historical.

Gladiator is pretty good.. just remember it is total fiction and you'll be OK.

Haven't seen the Patriot... but those I know that saw it liked it.  Its long.

Rental movies I'd recomend:

Mystery Alaska
American Beauty
X-Men
Saving Private Ryan

"Gladiator" was okay.  Nothing great, but probably worth a rental.

The best movie I have seen lately is "Best in Show."  It was bust-a-gut, laugh-out-loud funny.  Its still in theaters, but keep an eye out for it in the video store in the future.

Both Gladiator and The Patriot are good movies. Both long but good.

If you liked Braveheart you will like The Patriot.

X-men is good if you liked the comic books or cartoons.
I have been reborn a new man!

Notice I never said a better man.

X-men is science fiction.  It is based on the comic book series.  This is one of the first movies that were heavy in special effects but didn't totally rely on them.  It actually had a story and followed the original story line.

Best in Show is also an excellent movie... but watch "This is Spinal Tap" first (its on video).  You'll recognize most of the characters from there and get a better understanding of the humor.  Mockumentaries slay me.

gladiator was better than i expected - definitley fiction, the military equipment didn't seem appropriate for the time in some scenes but i dont know much about this period anyway -  haven't seen the others

I liked them all. I would rate Patriot higher than gladiator, but both were worth the 20 bucks at the movies so are definatly worth a rental. X-men was my fave, but i am a si-fi junkie, depends on your taste in movies i guess

Gladiator - very good if you like swords and men in skirts (like Braveheart then). Not very historical (like Braveheart then). mrfish - the equipment was at least historical (I watch the Discovery channel   )

The Patriot - very annoying

Brief synopsis:

Usual 'historical' Hollywood trash in which the Americans are the righteous heroes, and the British are satan worshipping, baby killing, mother f'cking bastards.

U571 - very annoying

Brief synopsis

Usual 'historical' Hollywood trash in which the Americans save the world single handedly, without the aid the of the Royal Navy (who in fact the film should be solely about, but we couldn't have a film where the British are the heroes, instead of being either evil (Jeremy Irons) or stupid (Hugh Grant), could we?).

Dowding,

Are you going to tell me that Monte Python's Search For The Holy Grail was a British Documentary attempt. If so,,,,,, they succeeded.

Never saw Braveheart so no idea if it was ok either.

Haven't seen any of the newer releases other than X-men. It was ok but not spectacular and I did like the comic books about 35+ years ago.

Gladiator - bad. Builds up something from the start, but then it just endlessly repeats itself.

Gladiator - Americans will like it. Foreigners are cruel animals and you have a hero that kicks ass. I think it sucked, because it's historically damned inaccurate.

Then again, Americans also got the enigma machine first.

X-Men is entertaining. The got that Wolverine dude pretty close to the comic book version.

Just see Das Boot again - doesn't get much better than that.

Or the bad bellybutton marines in Aliens.

Oh yeah.

Nah, best Monthy Python's film is "Brian's Life"...hands down

And U-571 is not only unnacurate historically but also unbeliable...those images of the sub getting depth charges so close are laughable, that means the sub go down fast or,if lucky, GO UP ASAP!

Not to forget that in 1942, and in that situation I'm sure that a german destroyer would be the most dangerous thing for the captured U-boat, sure...with all the british Coastal command looking for u-boats they choose to go to england all thru the western approaches...LOL!!!

And one wonders what was that DD doing in the middle of the atlantic, fishing I suppose (maybe Hitler wanted fish for dinner but with the blockade he couldnt have it), and rowing quite a bit(German DD endurance was ridiculous)...

And Type XIV  milk cows U boats like the one they sink in the film, were unarmed...

And the enigma machine itself was worth nothing. The bassic and most needed thing was the code book, not the machine.

Endless mistakes in that film. Was entertaining, that is true, but if you try to look into it with a few of realism critizism...lol

Charlie MoPic - Vietnam LRRP squad, 1st person - best Vietnam war flick I've seen, and I've seen a lot.

Spinal Tap - I second it. For laughs. Guaranteed. I've seen it 4 times.

Fargo - This is a sleeper. Funny. Seen it 3-4 times.

Dammit Santa! The bad-ass Marines were in Aliens 2!  "Game over man!"

Dowding.. I'd argue with you... but instead I'll just leave you with these two things:
• You are right
  • We still kicked your bellybutton back in the 1700's
Now.. if you want even more recomendations on movies... I have to recomend "Clerks" and "Mallrats".  These are mostly dialogue based movies but they are really funny.  The acting in Clerks is college league... but the conversations are hillarious.

How about one for the movies: "Unbreakable" was kinda slow and I couldn't figure out how they were going to end it.  Hat's off to whomever wrote that ending... I didn't see it coming.  It also provides an interesting interpretation of comic book stories.
