windows media player automatically starts on windows load?
« on: June 04, 2005, 10:16:34 AM »
hey, usually i wouldn't ask these types of questions because im good at handling adware on my own, but this one has got me stumped..

media player automatically runs when windows starts up.. im using XP Pro

it's not in my registry under run

its not in the startup folder

i've looked EVERYWHERE for a run command on it and i cant find one. it doesnt even load any specific file - it just boots up and sits there and annoys the living crap out of me

has anyone seen this before?

ive run hijack this, spybot, and adaware sofar.. getting frustrated

worst part is that a friend of mine brought his machine over and his started doing it too, so its probably some sort of nasty virus i guess but i cant find any out of the ordinary processes/ items in my run list

heres a hijack this log...

It happened to me when I upgraded to Media player V10. I got rid of it back then using "Killitall" (or something similar). I reinstalled XP since.. so I didn't look much into it.
Saw
Dirty, nasty furriner.

Happened to me when I upgraded to 10 as well.  Don't remember how I got rid of it, but it's not spyware.

If you have the latest vesion which i believe it's 10,you'll find what you need under toos/options/network.
Also, you may go to Control Panel/Add remove/set program access and defaults:select custom

Unfortunetly Moose,i dont believe you can un-install it,it's part of windows. You may un-check it under add remove and Uncheck the "enable access to this program" under custom settings.
Check your settings under your media player tools/options,
You may have it set to check for updates once a day, keep the player on top of other windows, connect to the internet(automatically) just to name a few....

Yes best bet is to look under "options' when its loaded and unclick the box that sets it to load when windows starts.

you will also want to tunr off or disable Java as you surely dont need that running all the time.

One question though.
WTF is "Alcohol.exe"?
Death is no easy answer

alcohol is a cd-image program that lets me store images of my games and programs on my file server instead of having to load them into the cd tray..which ends up being kinda important, because on my gaming box the dvdrw doesnt line up properly and i cant eject it with the button on the front of the case so its a pain to constantly switch cds when changing games
