The Story of GI Joe - 1945

Quote
Burgess Meredith plays Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle, who lived with soldiers on the front lines to report their stories. THE STORY OF G.I. JOE focuses on Pyle's time with Company C of the 18th Infantry and its journey from the desert of North Africa to Italy, where it took part in the march towards Rome. Meredith plays Pyle with simple dignity as he witnesses and records the goings-on. The picture utilizes an effective mix of real-life GIs and talented actors. Director William Wellman has created an unsentimental and honest portrayal of the brutal and harrowing lives of Pyle’s infantry soldiers in a World War II movie that is beloved by veterans.

also I saw a movie with ethan hawke where the setting was the battle of the bulge.  the american and german squads facing each other held an impromptu truce.  I can't remember the name of that movie but I found it interesting.

Amazing I see this question come up every so often and alot of good movies get mentioned. B.O.B. Midway. Prvt Ryan etc

Nobody seems to mention "Battleground"
With Van Johnson , John Hodiak , and a very young Ricardo Montalban. And the 101st airborn itself.

Damn good movie that really gives a decent insight to the lives and gripes, and hardships of the every day dogface.

Another good one is "The Story of GI Joe"

Both belong up there with the very best WWII movies IMO

Was going to mention this last post but wanted to keep it seperate.

I always see alot of people being critical of Prvt Ryan.
What exactly is the problem with it?

Every WWII vet I've spoken to  (and I've spoken to more then a few) and every WWII vet Ive seen interviewed who have seen it claimed it was a pretty damn accurate portrayal of what it was like...only worse.

Sorry but when it comes to the word of actual WWII combat vets against a bunch of amature historians,
I'll take the word of the combat vets every time.

And lets face it 99.999% of us here are "amature" historians

Yeah I forgot Catcha 22. Bloody great.

the Dambusters is good too though I noticed when they showed it on TV a while ago they've overdubbed the bit where "******" the dog gets run over! He's called Rover now! ( Mind you they are dead too so I guess its all the same lol.

The gripers are annoyed with the 'plot'.. a 'retrevial mission' for a troop who's family has already lost a brother or two. Can't say as i disagree.. that was a mite much, but the historical care taken in doing the invasion portion of the film is without parallel. I probably woulda liked it more if the entire cast was all 'unknowns' ala BoBro's.. Tom Hanks and Ben Afflacks gay pal detracted more from the realisim than the plot.. kinda like how Mel Gibson porked 'We were Soldiers.."

For the most part, the movie deals with combat arms issues very, very well... as does Band of Bro's. Of course, that's just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

I know windtalkers isnt the best movie ever made on WWII, but i liked it because of he way it tells of the "Windtalkers" roll in WWII.  Band of Bothers is at the top of my list.  I have no idea how many times i have seen all the episodes.  Pvt Ryan is good too.:aok

::snicker:: yerself!

My eyeballs were defective, but I had them lightsabered and now I see just fine.

SPR is about as accurate from a situational standpoint (and thus historical) as PH.

Every time I hear "P51's, sir!  Tank busters!" I want to kick my dog.

Yes, it makes me that mad.

That and over-ripe bananas.

Dad Boot would be at the top of my list.

LOL ummmm its a story, Stories dont have to be true simply  because they are set in a particular time period or during a specific historical event. They just have to be interesting.

Maybe a bit much but Im sure there were some real life missions conducted that were even more proposterous.

My favorites have all been listed.

Does anyone have the scuttlebut on the next Spielberg hanks project for HBO?

I recall hearing lots of rumours they were doing a series involving the PTO.

With the CGI capabilities available to us know I am drooling over the possibilties of a good WW2 aviation film.

A good one would be to make Ambroses last project a movie.  The name slips the mind but it was about George McGoverns TOD in a B-24.  I may not agree with his politics but the book showed him and his crew as true heros.

Image the mighty 8th as a picture let me stop now...
