I've just finished building a new computer.

My problem is that the CD drive won't work when plugged into the IDE channel. The tray won't even slide out. If I disconnect it from the IDE channel, it blinks and the tray will open fine. The CD drive is on Secondary IDE and the HDD is on Primary IDE, both Master. I've use two sets of cables and this has happened on both.

How can I get the drive working to setup XP?

Does the HDD need a partition to run the CD drive? If so, how can I create a partition for XP without the XP disk?

cd should be on the secondary ide .. set either on master or CS   (cable select)
Check the bios to be shure its showing up and enabled.

sometimes the cable makes a difference
there are 4 types of ide cables
33 , 66 , 100, 133 most secondary cdroms are on a 66 .. I use a 133 on most of mine  and it works fine .


if its an old cdrom 1x- 4x it may not work at all on a newer faster pc ,
  also some cdroms need a dos driver to work (load from floppy ussually)

I just bought it, listed here.

Drivers don't work without an O/S, do they? I'm using 100/133 cables. The BIOS isn't picking it up because it seems to power down when pluged into the IDE cable. It'll power up as if the system has just started if you remove the cable, but will die again when plugged back in. I had this problem with my other CD burner...maybe that's the problem. I got it to work in my CD/DVD combo, but the XP disk shattered inside of it upon install.

I've tried setting the jumpers on all possible locations on every spot on the cable EXCEPT on the Primary at Master.

EDIT: I found a newer-age DOS program to make partitions. I'll make a partition on the HDD tomarrow and see if anything clears up.

something isnt right then ... you dont need to do a partition when using XP ..

also it should show up in the bios as secondary master .......  cdrom

Try to plug it as slave to the first channle together with the HD.

Something is wrong here... maybe you plug in the cables upside down on the drive or the motherboard? Check for pin 1, should be marked with a little 1. That side must be the red wire on the ribon cable.

When you have only one device on the ide try cable select setting instead. Also plug it in the end, not the middle.

Visually check the interface on the cd rom, make sure there is no pin bent or missing. Also look if it is possible that you plugged the cable off to the side or up/down, sometimes the pins are not framed and you can manage to plug it in wrong.

This is the part that's really throwing me off. It was set to secondary master as well, and worked fine until the CD broke up.

The busted cd-rom burned up the other ide channel and your motherboard is now toast.

Thats my best guess.

Well, lets see if I can explain this better.

1. Plugged in three drives: HDD Master on channel 1, DVD/CD Slave on channel 2, CD/R/RW Master on channel 2.
2. Play with the cable and jumper settings to find that only the DVD/CD will operate on Master of channel 2.
3. DVD/CD starts up normally. BIOS recognizes the drive.
4. Insert Windows CD. Noticed tiny cracks, but what the hey. (Big mistake)
5. Windows begins setup and gives a Stop Error.
6. Reboot and begin installation. Begins to load drivers.
7. CD explodes. The drive keeps spinning just fine, only a little more crunchy sounding.
8. Shutdown the computer.
9. Buy new CD drive and new copy of XP Home SP2.
10. Problem returns.

The problem existed before the drive went haywire. I opened up the drive (simply because I like taking stuff apart) and there was nothing wrong; no burns or missing parts. It probably could have kep working if I would have removed the chuncks of CD, but it was a $20, 2 year old drive anyway.

Seems like I've gathered some great minds here. Thanks very much for the help with this.

By the way, hardware info is handy. Can't believe I forgot this...

All links are Newegg.

The motherboard was removed from Newegg. It can be found here as refurbished, but I bought mine new.

If your bios is not detecting your CD rom then you have one of the following.....

a) you plugged it in wrong
b) your cable is defective
c) your CD rom is defective
d) your MB is shot due to prior issues

Now you can try and plug your HD in secondary IDE to trouble shoot the IDE channel. Basically you screwed the pooch somewhere...

BTW you can run the CD rom as cable select on same IDE channel as HD with no problem....

I read a post somewhere by Skuzz on the limiting of the speed on the IDE channel. It picks the speed of the slowest device; I'm not sure which is slower.

I'll give it a shot, along with some other ideas I've come up with.

Right now your trouble shooting a problem, you need to know if the secondary channel is good. If its not then you either get a new MB or you run your CD off of CH 1 for now....

I've done every combo possible and neither channel is working. I realized that the HDD won't spin up until unplugged, but will keep spinning when plugged back in. The disk drive will completely power down when plugged in; even if in the middle of retracting the tray.

I'm getting a new motherboard and figuring out what hassles I have to go through to get a refund on this one...if I even can.
