Honor Flight
« on: June 03, 2005, 09:24:56 AM »
I don't know if anyone here is interested in either making a donation or flying.  I ran into a guy buying fuel in PA a few weeks ago who was returning home on a flight and today's AOPA ePilot had their website mentioned.

The group is called Honor Flight and they fly WWII Veterans to DC to see the WWII Memorial.  Once my work schedule gets a little more less hectic I'm going to see about flying the Mooney M20J I use as a get-around airplane for em.

Life is dangerous. No one seems to escape it alive.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I hope this isn't a TOS violation.  I didn't want to start a new thread if one already existed.  I'll hitchhike on Golfer's sentiments.

I just learned that my 95 year old father will be taking an Honor Flight in a couple of weeks.  I hadn't heard of this organization before.  My dad will be flying with a group of vets and escort "guardians" who make sure the old guys are taken care of properly.  They'll visit the WWII memorial, then other sites, and return the same day.  Don't you wish you could hear the real "war stories"?

What a fantastic organization.  Their goal is make sure every WWII vet has the opportunity to visit the WWII memorial in Washington, D.C.  They have a sense of urgency because WWII vets are dying off at an estimated 1000 per day.  They now use commercial airlines.  Southwest Airlines is a major sponsor.  They do not charge the vets.  They will not accept donations from WWII vets because they have sacrificed enough.   My donation check is in today's mail.

Our participation in this game has increased our interest in WWII.  We have relatives who could directly benefit from this organization.  This is a cause we can support.  Check out their work at www.honorflight.org.  Send them a check.  Buy a t-shirt.  Volunteer.

Golfer's orginal message was from 2005.  The Honor Flight Network has grown since then.  It appears the majority of Honor Flights are now using commercial aircraft with larger groups.  These groups are organized at the local level at "regional hubs".

From reading the web site, they still arrange for small flights, too, where there are not regional hubs.

If you're interested in more information check out the site at www.honorflight.org.
