Please do your patriotic duty this holiday weekend.
« on: November 21, 2001, 07:58:00 AM »
You know, all year long I hear people squeaking that there’s too many police, too many chickenshit laws, that we’re becoming a fascist state, etc. Who knows, maybe they’re right. At this time of year these issues come to a head with groups like the Libertarians coming out with their annual rant about seatbelt roadblocks.
 http://www.lp.org/press/archive.php?function=view&record=551

What these folks don’t realize and what law enforcement officials are failing to do is inform the public that wearing seatbelts is critical in “America’s War On Terrorism”.

Let’s say you’re one of millions of Americans commuting this weekend. The odds are you’ll be stuck in gridlock somewhere. Now if a terrorist bomb happens to go off in your vehicle and you’re not buckled up you, your spouse and your little ‘tator tots will go flying all over kingdom come. The image of their body parts and innards bouncing and spewing all over other folks SUVs is not a pleasant one.

Studies have shown that by wearing seatbelts and keeping the windows rolled up MINIMIZES BLAST RADIUS if a terrorist bomb were to go off.

Please do your patriotic duty this holiday weekend and buckle up. Not only will you not unduly inconvenience others you’ll also be doing the cleanup folks a favor too. Don’t you think that they’d rather be with their families instead of working overtime mopping up your remains?

Remember: wearing seatbelts and rolling up windows will MINIMIZE BLAST RADIUS.

And…

Have a good Turkey Day.  ;)

Incidently, a "seat belt check" is a nice way of saying that we're pulling you over to check for alcohol as well, which in my opinion okay with me.

Seatbelt law is one of the more obvious examples of misuse and distortion of democracy.

The government is supposed to do things for us that we cannot do ourselves - bombing Afghanistan, guarding the borders, running financial system, enforcing anti-trust laws.
Wiping our noses and fastening our seatbelts we can well do by ourselves.

In fact, the seatbelt law should reflect the wishes of the population - or at least majority. If the majority wanted to use them, there is no need for such law. If majority do not want to use them, the law would be contrary to population's wishes and would have to be repealed.

Not wearing a seatbelt in no way hurts other people, so why would anyone want to enforce such law on the others (except for bleading-hart liberals who are ?secretly? sure that they know what's best for the dumb cattle that we are and feel their divine mission to control us lest we wo ourself and nature some harm).

I think that for government bureaucrats it is very attractive to get involved into something which is not really a problem, tinker with it and then claim it as their accomplishment.
It is much easier then trying to tackle some real problem - like drugs or terrorism.

Of course there is the issue of children that should be protected from their own dumb parents - so that they can go on propagating their dumb genes - but even that is handled criminally inconsistently. If the law is to be taken seriously, shouldn't the parents not fastening their children's seatbelts be charged with criminal negligence and have children taken away from them on the spot?
Such careless parents may well expose their children to a scalding-hot shower or overfeed them with candies. We should probably have police present at those events too.

That will probably solve the other problem for us - after we are done posting a policemen to every citizen, the ones without the police escort will have to be terrorists. That is where the army can move in.

P.S. I always make sure that everyone in the same car with me is buckled in - even if I am not a driver. Or at least the people I care about and wish to live.

I tell everybody in the car to put on belts. It's not about them. It's about me. I don't want their 150+ pound body flying into me during an accident.

i think its funny that people dont wear seatbelts. ever been in a car wreck? even a slow one?

seatbelts are crucial and they can affect your ability to control the car under high forces by keeping you in place, so yes they can hurt other people if not on.

of course the vast majority of people are really lucky to still be a part of the food chain given how stunningly stupid they are and easily distracted by shiny objects so i guess its not much of a surprise

Holiday travel by automobile is predicted to be at a record high this Thanksgiving.

It will be interesting to see how much the highway death toll moves up or down as a result.

I don't care a whit if YOU don't wear a seatbelt in YOUR car or if YOU don't wear a helmet while riding YOUR motorcycle.

However, I think YOU ought to agree beforehand that neither you nor your surviving heirs will sue anyone if you're in an accident and get seriously injured or die. After all, you knowingly decided not to take all prudent, common steps to protect yourself from the known hazards inherent in traveling by motor vehicle.

Further, I think you should agree before hand that society will not be responsible for your medical bills if you don't wear a belt or a helmet. If you have health insurance, fine, they work on you. If you don't.. they watch you die. Such stupidity should be appropriately rewarded.

Hey, it's YOUR choice.. I'd never get in the way of that.   ;)

lol hang - glad i could contribute  :)

guess i should clarify - i think not wearing your seatbelt is confusing, but i dont think it should be illegal.

things like seatbelts, helmets, gambling drugs, hookers, same sex marriages, abortions etc etc should all be ok and legal because they fall into the domain of 'person'. that's an easy position to dispute but i thought i'd clarify i have a strict interpretation on things like that and think common sense ought to be used rather than legislation.

go away uncle sam! go mint some money or something, stay outta our cars and bedrooms  ;)

Its only a civil infraction. Same as jaywalking or in many places, spitting on the sidewalk.

If you are intensely opposed to this, write your congressperson. Vote em out!

Meanwhile, I'll be wearing mine, not because driving without one is a civil infraction, but because I've got common sense.

Not same as. Jaywalking exposes other people to risk of injury.

I guess spitting on the sidewalk could too, miko.

But I'm referring to the classification of the offense. Not wearing a seatbelt = non-criminal civil infraction. Window tint too dark = non-criminal civil infraction, same with noisey muffler, improper parking, failing to change your address on your driver license when you move, and on and on.

There are a lot of laws like this that intersect with your life. They can be changed.  The law requiring motorcycle riders to wear helmets was recently replealed here in Florida. You no longer have to wear one. Wait a while, and it might change back. Why? Because of voters.

My larger point is that it gets a bit tiresome to hear these laws referred to as "distortions of democracy", or to cry out that we are becoming a "fascist" state. The fact is, these laws are democracy in action.

Blur, I'm begining to see a pattern in your posts...

Happy Holidays   :)

Eh?  Not wearing a seat belt in no way hurts other people, until the idiot not wearing a seat belt gets into an accident.  Once that happens, there are countless ways it can hurt other people.
