No, its not a disorder or a syndrom, nor does it have anything to do with food or booze.

Its not Bush's fault either..

Loran C?

No..

AIS is a GPS based system. Automatic Identification System. Clever stuff really. All ships over 300 tonnes in international traffic has to have it. Lots of yatchs are starting to use it too.

Ah. Locator system.. kinda handy to have. Makes it easy for the coast guard to pinpoint the location of your demise.

Kind of a locator system, but not used for that purpose Hangtime.

I've seen it in action, and its nice and thats why i have a hard time trying to get my father inlaw  NOT to get it.
I have managed to keep him from buying a radar for his boat, but he now has his eyes on this system. He is a gadget freak... but he should focus more on beeing a better sailor and less on watching flashy blinky things that use alot of power.

Flashy-blinky things that keep you from piling up on rocks are a GOOD thing.

Not if they keep your attention off the horizon and on the flashy-blinky things (that you cant trust anyway) ;)

I have also talked him out of (for now) getting a plotter. paper maps are the way to go.

I have "allowed" him to get a GPS because he does know that you cant trust them so he doesnt.

Just the amount of maintnance that I have saved him (or me that would be) on keeping all those flasy-blinky things off his boat makes all this worth it.

-edit- I have just as many flashy-blinky things on my 19 footer than he has on his 40. :D

Maybe it is because of your location in the great snowy wastelands, but I can regularly find a single sunken car in 180' of water 30 miles offshore with GPS.  I trust it just fine.  Radar is the same, I trust it implicitly, unless my eyes tell me differently.  I agree with you about the plotter, though.
