Windows update poked

When I try windows update I get

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Microsoft Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer.

Follow these steps to access Windows Update through the Help and support Center:
Click Start, and then click Help and support.
If you are running Windows XP, click Keep your computer up-to-date with Windows Update.
If you are running a Windows Server 2003 family product, click Windows Update. "

Win XP SP2. Tried disabling firewall etc. No go. Games machine does it no probs. Have I got a virus?

If you have a very old copy of XP on that machine, you might have to manually pick the updates to be done.

First, get the updated Microsoft Installer, then manually pick the critical components, leaving out SP2 until the last.

Also, make sure you allow both Automatic Updates and Backup Intelligent Transfer services to run while you are doing all the updates.

New PC in November. Professional with SP2 and updated till last updates (May 20th I think) . It's very odd. Definitely not a virus.

I can do it manually, but you know how it is, these things niggle!

I wonder if Automatic Updates will still work?

Hmm. Background Intelligent Transfer was set to Manual. Set it to Auto.

No dice. Don't sweat, it's not very important. I just hate these little things that just stop working for no reason, tho I know there probably is a reason.

Also that when you do a Google, very few other people seem to encounter the same problem!
