If you search around in this section of the BBs you'll find quite a few great posts detailing different techniques and styles used by many skinners.  Theres a great one in the first few pages by Greebo on weathering.  Its definately worth taking a look at.

Theres also a very, VERY basic skinning guide that I made.  Its pretty incomplete and nowhere near good enough to make you a great skinner, but its a start.  And as Skychimp posted, he made one not too long ago.

Mine - http://ahskinning.netfirms.com  Also in my signature.

SkyChimps - http://www.skins.the-ones.org/ also in his signature.

And Sky is referring to Adobe Photoshop and Jasc Paint Shop Pro in his post above.  They are both excellent image editors that most of the skinners here use.  I use PSP frankly because it was MUCH cheaper than Photoshop.

Whats most important when learning to skin is to research the actual planes.

What I mean with that is to research how metal looks, how metal looks worn, how paint looks, how paint looks worn (Japanese, German, UK, Russian, US paint wears differently), how each individual plane is worn (where its worn and why), where was the plane used (theatre inpacts on weare), oil leaks (where did the plane have oil leaks?), ect ect.

If you can get a understanding for all of that about the actual plane then you will be ready to start skining. For me as a totally new skinner this was the most time consuming thing. Once you understand how your plane should look then its time to start making theory into practice.

TexMurphy pretty well summed it up.  50% research followed by 50% skinning.  Not counting learning your graphics packages.

If you intend to do more then one skin, go for the commercial packages listed above but if you only want to do one skin, you can accomplish a lot with MSPaint and GIMP freeware.

In case you don't know, you download the default templates while in the Hanger, right click the mouse; and if you want to submit to HTC, be sure to read Skuzzy's sticky in this forum.
Easy in-game again.
