Skuzzy recomendation please?
« on: June 12, 2005, 01:36:21 PM »
Skuzzy,

Blazes in our squad is having problems with his video card puking...over heating it sounds like. he has cleaned it, fan is working etc. Well he asked me for a recomendation on a new video card as everybody in the squad thinks I am the resident computer geek :-)  I thought I would go to the sorce and see what you recommend. Seems to me the 9600 is probably a pretty good match for his processor...thats is I am not sure he would get a performance increase in a better card. Your knowledge is coveted!  Thanks.  Here is what he sent me:

"Cris:  Got a AMD XP 2600+ 2.08 Ghz processor with 512 RAM.  Right now I am running a RADEON 9600 video card.
I got plenty of hard drive space and everything else is pretty standard.  Let me know if you need more info and what you think about a new card.  I do not want to spend a ton of money becasue I expect I will be getting a new computer next year anyway.  But if a resasonably priced card is out there that would give me some better performance and stability in AH I would consider it.  Thanks!"

which 9600 does he have ???

Ive got a crucial 9600 pro 128 in my 2500+ amd and i get 30-85 fps in ah w/ sliders at 1/2 way and distance at full

a 9800 pro 256 card runs really sweet also in that setup

Id check to see what power supply he's running 1st . he's gonna need a strong 400 watts

I will try to find out. The thing is it was working well up untill recently.  The last few revamped maps have made his card freeze & dump to desk top.  My system 3.12ghz northwood, ATI X800 pro 256, Audigy 2ZS, 1 gig 400mhz ddr mem had to tone down settings a bit as it noticed frame rate hits on latest maps.  I am trying to find out what sound card he is using & what video drivers. Gunna try to get him into the 4.12 drivers. And I am afraid he has on board sound (AC-97) me thinks.  He has about every detail turned down in game and on card. The only way he can play with out freeze ups is in 800 res.

A 6600GT might match that system well...  $160ish on pricewatch I think.
Everyone I know, goes away, in the end.
