Okay, I want to hear it now, which make is good which isn't? I've had 3 or 4 headsets the last couple years and they all break down eventually, so I wouldn't mind spending some $$$ on my next set if it means it will LAST and has good QUALITY. So, gentlemen, what should I look for?

I picked up a nice headset/mic from, of all places, radio shack.

They work great, they're small, are light wieght, and very comfortable.

I use em as a headset or switchout the earphone plug and plug in my speakers move em forward off my ears and just use the mic.

Had em for about 2 years now. No Problems.

I won a Plantronics Audio 90 headset at the con two years ago. I like it quite a bit. Most of the time I just use the mic (which squaddies say has good sound quality compared to my old el-cheapo), but when it's late and I need to be quiet I'll use the headset speakers, which I'm also very satisfied with.

They're usually $30, but I've seen them cheaper on sale. I'd buy another set again without hesitation.

Buy a nice Sennheiser headset and put a mic on it. If you want the best, thats the way to go...

The good thing about applying your own mic is you can find mics that have 'push to talk' and 'vox' type settings right on them.

Yes I've looked at Sennheiser they seem to be good. What do you mean by adding your own mic though? A table mic or what?

Had a plantronics usb thingy but the ear pads wore out and I was worried about getting calloused ears - now have a Speed link Medusa 5.1 - very nice, comfortable

I took a tape recorder mic (the dual plug one) and put on an adapter on the small plug (the recorder) and cut away the ear peice. It has a long cord, so I leave the control box for the mic and the extra wiring next to the computer.

I then applied velcro to the mic and then applied the other velcro side to the headset using superglue on bother halves to make sure they hold after repeated use.

Now, when I do Silent Hunter, I can rip off the mic and get it out of the way and I can reapply it in seconds for AH. It also swivels up and down as well as being fully adjustable in/out and up/down as many mics are.

Like I said, the extra benefit is the vox and pust to talk settings are part of the mic system itself as well as a nice sound filter that takes care of background noise and such.

Never buy a headset/mic unit all in one unit, you'll either get poor mic reception, poor sound, or both.

I can't find a pic of the mic I used, but you can apply any quality mic to the set. I think I'd use a Court reporter type now, its lighter weight with even better filters.

This is what I use. I'm hard on head sets (So is my wife when she beets me upside my head) So I've gone threw sevrel Head sets. This is by far the best one I've ever used. The only thing that could make it better is if it was wireless. Good controls, Awsome sound quality, Very sensitive mic.

I use this.

Altec Lansing AHS-302 Stereo Behind-The-Neck Folding Headset

They sound great, comfortable to wear. and are cheap enough (around $20) to replace after throwing them off your head in frustration. (I go through about 2 per year)

I like the behind the neck style because I can flip one earpeice off my ear and listen to the TV or wife/kid ack and still hear the game comfortably.

Dont like the over the head style as they just dont feel right to me and always seem to want to slide off my head. also the ear cups for some reason seem to give me an earache.

Go back to radio shack and get yourself a Y connector (forget the actual name) and you wont have to switch anything out provided you have a set that has a in line volumme control.

Should have 1 male end and split into 2 female ends.
the idea is you plug the male end into your sound card.
then you plug your speakers into one female end and the headset into the other.
Now you can turn down the volume on the speakers themselves and still hear and adjust the volume on your headset.
And when you want sound out of your speakers just turn the volume dial upon the speaker itself
And you can kiss your cable swapping days goodby forever

Got a pair of Steel Sound 5H's at E3. They sell for a pretty penny, but very comfy, with a retractably mic and really great sound quality and bass speakers that sound like a full on 5.1 system.

Yeppers! I've been using mine for about a year now with no problems. It's sturdy and can take a beating. Heck, I don't know how many times the mic has been submerged in beer during this time and still works like a charm.
