Do you guys still have lots of English Oak? Oak gives a great flavor, even though hickory and mesquite are the usual suspects around the US.

try guava. it's a very hard wood and the flavor is tropical.  you'll be in the caribbean in your mind.

the closest I've come was once before I had a smoker I helped a buddy of mine chop some up for his wood burning stove.
Smelled so good I wanted to take a bite out of the split logs LOL

I do Oak. Hickory and mesquite.
Of the 3 your right. mesquite is the best. Particularly for beef
Though I think Hickory is a tad better tasting for any kind of pork

Dred, well I'm lucky enough to have a neighbour that has an apple tree so I get a couple of pounds a year from him. Any apple orchards near by? ask them about buying some of their trimmings?


RPM, gotta agree that mesquite is great, but ya have to understand that it's kinda hard to find up here, and generaly a lot more expensive when I do find some. Just imagine some apple smoked baby backs though

We USED to have several orchards in my area. But new development made them go bye bye for use of HUGE houses on postage stamp peices of property. (not to mention the farmlands)

there is one but every time I've remembered to stop there nobody has been around.

I'll be driving through Western/northwestern NJ in a couple weeks and see if they have any that way if I remember lol

Worse comes to worse I'll use Toads suggestion and order some from Cabelas
