I heard a rumor (gasp, NOT in the NAVY!!) yesterday at the reserve center about the Navy phasing out the IT rate and contracting all IT work to the private sector in a few years. Have you heard anything about this? I was seriosly considering cross-rating over to IT but not if this is true.

I haven't heard that. Remember IT's used to be RM's and are still needed aboard ship. I don't think they would contract a shipboard duty to a civilian contractor.

I talked to a Chief here today and he said the same thing. No way would civies be aloud onboard to run IT systems. Last at-sea command he had there were 3 IT departments. I swear, you hear more scuttlebutt than you can believe anywhere you go. Somethings never change.

What they have done is to force this NMCI p.o.s. on the Navy. When they did that all shore IT stuff(computer network) is handled by civilians..except for actual radio comunications.

Well, to us, the reservists, NMCI has been a blessing, of sorts. Yes, it's a pain in the rear but it let's us get so much more done on a given weekend than was possible just a few years ago. A mixed bag yes, but one that we really needed.

I do like the fact that if I was in your office, I could access my account from there, unlike before when every command had a seperate network.
