Yawn,

Buy a printer, get photo quality paper and do the job youself. It can be done for FAR less than $100.00.

Either that or run in circles scream and shout that the world is ending just because you didn't get your pictures printed.

Typically that is what I do.

I posted the link for the interest & discussion of the board because I found it amusing that these places would do that.

If it bores you.
Simply dont respond.

Wasn't responding to you, was responding the the tone of the article. It seemed to me that there must have been a very slow news day when that article came out. All the hype but no indication of how simple it is to not have to deal with it. Whatever you want to take it as, not my problem.

hmm

i remember reading on the fredmiranda forums a while back something about this, but i thought it was more due to the fact professional photographers were trying to use walmart as a cheap way of getting their prints done easily.

Exact opposite.  That would be a 'poor professional photographers' story, while this is a 'blood-thirsty professional photographers suing the bejeesus out of everybody' story.

What? Is Wal-Mart somehow liable if someone reproduces a copyrighted print in their store?

Apparently their LawyerDroids think they might be.  Perhaps they should follow Kinko's example.

Prominently post a notice saying Blah blah violate copyright blah only make prints from pics you own blah blah blah.

That way, the potential violation is the responsibility of the person doing it, and the rest of us can continue to take pictures without the lens cap on.

Oddly enough, their lawyerdroids don't seem overly concerned if someone buys a gun at Wal-Mart and kills somebody.

To play an advocate of the devil, selling the gun is not illegal, though it could be argued that the process of printing the image could be.  Consequently, I'm not sure your argument is really applicable.

That said, posting a notice that the customer is responsible for determining copyright ownership seems pretty reasonable.

I'm not sure that Wal-Mart is interested in investing the money it would take to train a minimum wage clerk to be able to professionally determine the artistic merit of a shot.

If it ain't watermarked, it should be free game according to the clerk.

Yeah... it's probably not a good argument. I admit.

Still, Wal-Mart seems to turn nanny when it comes to explicit lyrics in music, but they don't seem to mind selling "R" rated or unrated movies.

At best, Wal-Mart is inconsistent. The copyrighted image worry is just one more example.

WalMart is hardly being inconsistent.  I argue that they're enforcing an unstated policy to appeal to their mainly conservative customer base.

Censoring rap music because of sinful 'sexy lyrics' while having the Rambo Six Pack DVD special next to the the Americo "Instant Nativity Scene" (made in China) seems pretty consistent if you look at their actions with that in mind.

Just an opinion that seems to match the evidence... but I'm just this guy, you know?

Apologies, this seems to be headed for a threadjack, not my intention.  Basically, their decision to be wacky about the photo printing does NOT fit their past behavior.  Usually, they duke it out when they think they're in the right.  Maybe this hasn't noticably touched their bottom line yet.
