Thought this might bring back some memories.
From an ongoing thread in The Damned mail:
Now that's ancient history. I was a Muskie sometime back in the early 90's.
I have a real hard time figuring out exactly what year(s) it was. I do
remember Turkey Hams formed up right in the middle of that stretch. Squad
was BMan, Stiletto (the original one), Rapier, Bug, Shep, Velcro Fly, Ghost
Rider, and a few others. I remember flying against Vossman, HiTech, Volstag,
and a few others. Actually winged with DoK a couple times. Never melted the
plastic but kept it pretty warm in those days. Called myself Felix (after a
character in a book I had just read) in those days. Tail number was 2130.
Took a year off and 2130 got reassigned so I was 6620(?) for a while. Was
real weird seeing someone else with MY tail number. One night I logged on
and magically I was 2130 again. Very strange.
Anyway, when I came back I still flew mostly RR and didn't care much for the
then current crop of Muskies or what Aland had become so I popped over to
Cland. Didn't join a squad but winged with DEMON75 mostly. High alt in hogs
picking zekes out of our teeth. At some point DEMON disappeared and Genie
started to get a little weird. Didn't fly much for a while and then heard
about AW starting up on CIS. Popped over there pretty early in the game when
Cland was deserted and there was a constant furball of dweebs over B82 (I
think it was B82, the field numbers used to be burned into my brain, I'm
getting old). After a couple of months of that Snowman had fired up the
Damned there and recruited me. I know Cap was already there, I think Biker
came on board shortly after that, but I'm not sure.
I think my fondest memories are from that CIS era. (Of course anything
before that starts to get lost in the haze of a failing memory.) The running
wars with the DOW, killing Cap for stealing my food, and especially the late
night hunting runs with WT. I think we developed a telepathic connection
when it came to tag teaming in FWs. Things sure soured for a while when the
whole Tigers split thing happened. I spent a lot of time flying as the one
and only active Damned on CIS after that. Hats off to BD for taking the
reins the way he did. He built the CIS Damned back up from almost nothing.
Anyways, I think you guys know all the more recent stuff.
I haven't been up much in a while. When I was, things just felt strange.
Seemed like all I ran into was spindweebs and D9s taking headons. I suspect
if I got on now I might not recognize the CPIDs of 99% of the guys flying.
In any case there was a sense of community in AW back when things were
smaller that just isn't there for me anymore. When you logged on you knew
the vast majority of the folks flying. There were certainly rivalries and
some out and out feuds, but you didn't have stuff like Zazen and his horde
of disciples. But hey, times change and you can never go back.
