I'm about to get enough memory to run AH online, and I see circuit city has PC 2700 512MB on sale from Kingston with rebates bringing it down to 32.99 per stick. I have a Dell Dimension 4550 w/533 fsb, currently running 256 DDR 266 ram. (It was an"upgrade" ram from 128 which I now know wasn't close enough.) Does anyone know if this is "value" ram that I should run away from, or should it be ok? Crucial has Dell specified ram (512mb) for $57 in my door, but the thought of 1 gig for $66 is somewhat exciting.

I dunno what timings the kingston ram would be at, but if you are using DDR 266 (pc2100) ram right now, then pc2700 should work ok. It may not be super speedy at default timings but if you're up to a little experimentation you may be able to lower the timings a bit if you run it at pc2100 speeds.

Kingston is usually decent quality. For that price, it seems like it would be tough to beat. Even the slowest ram on the market won't affect overall system speed more than a few percent anyhow, and as you're upgrading from a total of 256 meg it will still be an overall performance gain in the end.

Remember that the lower speed RAM is the default speed. If you have two RAM sticks, PC2100 and PC2700, both will run at PC2100.

I'd check Newegg.com for memory. They usually have all the details right there and let you compare multiple products. Speedy shipping too.

EDIT: If you can find the numbers and crud off the memory/box, you can probably find the exact same thing on Newegg and compare.

Thanks for the help! I'll probably get some ram from crucial as I have heard that Dell can be really proprietary. Also, whels mentioned a while ago that one should go quality over quantity in ram. I'm not sure which type of kingston ram this is (I know it is PC 2700), but, at $32 for 512MB, I'm not real sure that it isn't "value" and just how it would work in my system. Crucial gaurantees their's will work in my Dell. I've looked around and Circuit City's product number is nowhere to be found outside of them. They have rebranded the Kingston Chip so I can't get into the details without getting to the store, and maybe even not then. Thanks again. Hope to be up flying next week.
