I enjoyed flying in one of Doc Gonzo's scenarios "relatively" recently, but havn't seen him around recently.

I also read in a motorcycle magazine about a fella who's alias was Doc Gonzo checking out recently. Is that a coincidence? Has anyone heard from the Doc lately?

I think the one who checked out was Hunter S. Thompson. The original Gonzo journalist and creator of the Doc Gonzo name. I used to fly with Doc Gonzo in AW.... but never was under the impression that they were the same guy.

Whew, I was worried!

Then I found out the guy was 69 year old burn out. What was weird was he had the same sword/fist/gonzo thing that our Gonzo uses...er stole I guess.

many of those "legend in your own mind" types that think they are somehow special due to the fact they were paying per hour to play an online flight game plus paying to be logged on to an isp plus paying long distance charges all use shade accounts. why is that?  :D

Dok Gonzo isn't special because he paid per hour to play online air combat sims.  He's special because he invented the entire concept of scenarios and other community-based events that now form the core of such games as Aces High.

He has earned the title of "legend" in this community, not just in his own mind but in the mind of many others.

Weelll, long, long before I came to AH in 2003 I was reading about on-line sims and thrilled by the idea. About 1996 I was fascinated about Warbirds and even longer ago a friend had a copy of Air Warrior for DOS.

We couldn't even play it on-line in those dark ages of the internet. But one of the contributors of the AW manual was a Doc Gonzo. To me that counts as pretty legendary as far as on-line sims go... :D

Of course everybody now plays on-line games so there seems to be a lot of longing to the days of yesteryear when people playing on-line still had valour and honour. I guess the community was much tighter then.

Even a casual and very average player like me sometimes gets a bit annoyed by completely clueless people, but isn't that how we all started?

It all comes down to that it isn't any more as it once was. And the human brain tends to keep the good memories. But you can't turn back the clock, nor can we change the way people want to play. The lost thing I read from Doc G. was a rant on the horde mentality in the MA, here on these boards...

I read the same rant and also participated in an exchange of volley posts with the legendary Doc Gonzo.  The impression I came away with is that he like many other "pioneers" are having a hard time dealing with the growing success of the MMOG flight variant and it's inevitable changes.  I'm sure that if one of our founding fathers were able to come forward in time to 2005 he might well be feeling the same as "our" Doc Gonzo.  Life is dynamic I would suggest a good dose of get over it and move on.  The formula that this current MMOG has is apparantly successful so in the words of Suleyman the magnificent, "the dogs bark but the caravan moves on"  I recall seeing an advertisement in the late '80s or early '90s for an online flight game.  I called the toll free number and spoke to the developer (I assume) after he laid out the costs involved I thanked him and hung up.  I came away with the impression that it was far too costly and that it would fail.  I am grateful (as it were) to Doc Gonzo and others upon whose bank accounts we are currently standing for funding the developement of this entertainment medium allowing it to be today played inexpensively by the likes of me.  :D

Maybe they play under shades because they just want to play the game, and don’t want to deal with people such as you. It sounds like they have already taken their dose of "get over it". Maybe you should take yours now.
