New Book Contest Coming...
« on: June 23, 2005, 04:20:31 PM »
Hi Guys,

Thought I should run another book trivia contest while the O'Club is still up and running. This time I'll be giving away a new copy of book I just got finished reading last night The Privileged Planet which is a fascinating (at least to me) scientific examination of the factors that indicate just  how rare in the universe the planet Earth and all its phonomena really is.

While The Privileged Planet has been condemned by some as merely a apologia for intelligent design, I have difficulty believing anyone who would dismiss it that way has actually read the book. The book relies heavily on the work of NASA affiliated Astrophysicists,  Astrobiologists, and Astronomers, and includes the research and conclusions of many self-professed atheists and materialists including Robert Jastrow.

It's also a good laymens level introduction to the science of Astrobiology and the discoveries of men like Copernicus, Hubble, and Einstein.

Trivia questions to follow...

Thanks, Seagoon. You've made the BBS seem like a commercial.

My apologies to Sandman for commercializing the BBS, if it helps try to think of my initial post as an irritating late night public service announcement placed by the Ad Council involving a Native American or underage smoking or driving while intoxicated or...

<SCENE: Seagoon exits a canoe to wade through a sea of computer printout garbage, turns to an old fella in rustic fishing garb> "Grandpa, why are British people more likely to drive drunk and litter?" "Seagoon," he answers wisely, "You are a bigot, because you think of them as 'British', and not as our friends the Eurotards. Now are you gonna fish or what? Nilsen needs his boat back, boy" ]

By the way Seagoon, very clever posting pictures this time instead of questions.....makes it hard to google :)

p.s. You should change the file name of the pics so people can't go to the link and find the answers.

Clarke's logic stops at his first point.  Contingent means an outcome that may depend on whether something happens or not.

So how could a being exist in the first place  to be contingent or necessary as used in the first sentence?  If beings are contingent, then it follows that something happened to cause the being to exist.  So necessary is not the opposite, but part of contingent.
