Lets discuss the rules...
« on: June 24, 2005, 11:42:44 AM »
1- Posts are to be made in the relevant forum. Users are asked to read the forum descriptions before posting.
Makes sense

2- Threads should remain on topic, do not "hijack" topics.
Should be more of a guidline than a rule. This is only a problem when topics become boring. Many discussions take turns that may seem off topic, but are actually just extentions of the thought. For example... Gay marriage leads to nature vs nurture debates. logical

3- Do not open a new thread that duplicates a current topic.
Yep, unless of course you have a different slant on the topic

4- Members should post in a way that is respectful of other users and HTC. Flaming or abusing users is not tolerated.
I usually only call people I like names. This may be abused, but we still need to be able to attack ideas with both barrels.

5- Flamebaiting, trolling, or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed.
One of the codes I deal with ever day reads "Built according to generally accepted engineering practices". This rule reminds me of that code. Too easily used for evil as well as good.

6- Members are asked to not act as "back seat moderators". Issues with any breach of rules should be brought to HTC's attention via email at support@hitechcreations.com.
OK

7- Members should remember this board is aimed at a general audience. Posting pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc. will not be tolerated. This includes attempts to bypass the profanity filter.
Amen

8- Cheating allegations or descriptions are not allowed. Email support@hitechcreations.com to report any issues regarding this. HTC permanently bans anyone caught cheating in Aces High. We take cheating and allegations of cheating very seriously.
Okee Dokee

9- Complaints about a player's behavior online should be emailed to support@hitechcreations.com rather than posted to this board.
No problem

10- Spam is not tolerated here under any circumstance.
Spam is very popular in Hawaii... (jk)

11- Do not use overly large signatures. Signatures should not take up more than 5 normal sized text lines in height. Do not use images in your signature.
righteeo

12 - Users are permitted to upload one of their own avatars. Avatars must be in good taste and consistent with the other rules of this board.
bouncy boobs are tasteful

13- Do not punt topics. Punting would be making a non-substantive post for the express purpose of bring the thread to the top of the thread list.
Huh? Many threads deserve punting. For example we have set up meetings at Airshows over the years and punting those threads when the date gets close is necessary

14- Members should post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing". That is users should not post excessive numbers of emoticons, large, small or coloured text, etc. Similarly users should not SHOUT or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts.
I hope spelling poorly counts as 'normal'.

15- Threads started or, posts made, with the intent to inflame, incite will be considered trolling and not allowed.
See #5

Posts and threads may be edited, deleted, or locked for violations of these rules. Continued or blatant violation of these rules may result in a temporary or permanent ban.

Respectfully, I'd like to disagree with you on this one.  The rule is fine.  Using your specific example, what's wrong with posting 'Hey guys, just a reminder that the airshow is coming up.  Can we get an updated list on who's attending?" or something like that.  Just posting 'punt' is estupid, kinda like posting 'This post is INteresting!' when a thread starts going downhill or posting a "test -pls ignore" message instead of coming up with SOME sort of topic to post (which happens to provide a test at the same time).

MT, if the usual rabble rousers would simply make an effort to abide by The Rules, posts like this one wouldn't even be necessary.

For example:

"4- Members should post in a way that is respectful of other users and HTC. Flaming or abusing users is not tolerated.
I usually only call people I like names. This may be abused, but we still need to be able to attack ideas with both barrels "

If it can be done with respect, all well and good. If not, don't reply. I think most thinking people can respond to most posts in a civilized manner that I believe HT, et. al. would have no beef about. Heck I read post almost every day that I take extreme exception too, and usually don't reply, or at least delay my reply til I'm calm and rational. I guess it is asking to much to expect that from others, though. Plus, it helps to have a thick skin.

Heh.  I cant count how many times I've typed out a response to a post, stuff like 5 paragraphs long and full of all these witty remarks and burn comments........

Only to delete the whole thing and either try again or just forget it because I realized I cant find a nice way to say anything to the I was responding to.  Every now and then I hit the button before my good sense filter kicks in though.  Have to have this rule.  The whole point of the "second chance" for the O'Club is about learning self control.  Not about proving how witty we are and how much our comments and comebacks deserve to be aired.

And while Spam may be popular in Hawaii (and it is), NOT IN MY HOUSE BUDDY!  Yech.  You ever looked at Spam?  When it comes out of the can?  Jigglin on the counter like a fat lady doin the bunny hop.  All that nasty gel stuff stuck to it.  Brrrrrrr.

I think discussions like this are valuable on many levels.

Primairly, it helps us as a community develop our own standards. For example, I think if Skuzzy sees something that makes sense and should help, I'm guessing he'll promote that.

At the same time if the moderation gets too heavy-handed we lose what we come to the OC for; it's important that Skuzzy see that aspect as well.

So, glad you started it MT.

I totally disagree with everything you said.

Hah! J/K.

I do think some of the rules, like #5 are going to be a problem depending on who is applying them. There's always going to be different estimations of what it really says and disagreements over "this guy said this" and "that guy said that".

I think the bottom line for all of us though is we almost lost the OC. They're trying to keep it going... for us, not them.... and this is the method they chose.

Let's work with them, not against them. It's why I think this thread has value.

I see the "hijack" rule as problematic. There's alot of wandering in any good thread. If it really wanders, the guys doing the wandering should probably start a new thread. If the originating thread dies, it dies.

#5 and #15 are going to be problems. Why? Simple, it's like the NFL, MLB or NBA; by nature those include judgement calls by the ref. Was that in the "strike zone?" How about that one? Is the ump blind? Not sure how you fix this, either. Too much regulation isn't really the answer. You don't want everything spelled out to the last detail. #4 kind of fits in that category too.

Nobody said it would be pretty or easy; it's more like making sausage. ;)
