P-28 L, J, or G?
« Reply #15 on: June 25, 2005, 01:54:51 PM »
The P-38G seemed quite capable to me when put alongside concurrent aircraft like the Fw190A-5, Spitfire F.Mk IX and Bf109G-2.  I only flew two or three sorties in it as I am not huge on the P-38s, but I could see doing ok in it without too much practice.

By Virgil Hilt's first post in this thread explained exactly why the K/D ratios are where they are.

The reason why I mostly use the L is because of the larger ordnance it can carry.  Those 10 HVARS pack more punch than those 6 bazooka rockets the J carries.  As for the lack of dive flaps, that really hasn't been an issue with me.  The times I do use the J for attack, I make sure that I start my runs about 13k and use my rudders and throttle to keep my speed in check.

I think the last two tours, I've used the J exclusively, even for attack runs.

I prefer L, G just turns too well for my taste and everyone else flies the J. Also when people see that L tag they usually think I'm just someone going to bomb something, surprises the hell out of em when I end up on their 6;)

Depends what the situation depends what 38 I will use.  If it is a large furball I would rather use the 38L because of the faster speeds so its easier to get away.  For those base defense situations I would use the 38G because of the great turning abilities of the 38G.  The 38J I would use if the enemy is basically going above me most of the time.

Once I hopped in the J ... it was all done ... maybe have flown an L once or twice since the new models came out.

The J just seems more nimble all around than compared to the L. I tried the G, and like Rino, I can't see watermelon in that cockpit ... that armor plated glass just kills it for me ... too dark. Wish it wasn't like that as I would love to fly it more and see what you are talking about.

note that 38Gs were lite version of 38F  and these early versions carry less internal fuel than Js.

I've been flying the 38J pretty much for the same reason AKAK stated. Despite the lack of boosted ailerons and dive flaps - you only need the latter if you really screw the dive angle on your attack run. As for the lax rate of roll, plan your attack so it isn't a factor.

But the best reason for the 38J for me is the paintjobs. I don't know about you, but running in NOE with that black paintjob is just screaming "I have become death - in a pimpass ride." If the L had some dark paint jobs that were useful while down low instead of reflecting like a discoball of please kill me, i'm easy - i'd use the L a bit more.

But IMO, there is nothing better then screaming along in a black cok of death hugging the tree's and tearing up the rear.

you get use to it...only time it is real bad is nightfall, then i have to attack from underneath and get the nme in the light for a siloutte to shoot at, if he is low, its is pain in rear....other than that, its ez after a few sorties.   give it a day or two in it, you will like it.  what a sexy ride.

Note that the P-38F is lighter than the P-38G.

P-38F gross weight: 14,850 lb
P-38G gross weight: 15,800 lb

Think some of the weight difference could be attributed to some of the improvements to the G model.

Another reason why I fly the P-38J.  When you see Little Edriss on your six about to blow you out of the sky, you know it's a Raider in that ride.  The 479th skin is just beautiful to look at, unless you're looking at it when you look behind you.
