Whats good for clearing weeds/grass?
« on: June 30, 2005, 10:59:48 AM »
I have a few areas that I want to prevent weeds from growing in.  Is there a good spray to nuke the area with?  Keep in mind I need to cover a couple thousand square feet so a squirt bottle is not the best option.  I wondering if one brand/product is really better than another for long term weed/grass prevention.

Go to the hardware store and ask about a pre emergent agent. This stops seeds from germinating, think of it as plant birth control. I used it and it was usually good for about 3 to 6 months control. It needs to soak into the ground to work. I used a hose mounted sprayer with the pre emergent in the bottle under the hose. The stuff is usually colored heavily, either green or a flourescent yellow so you can tell if it is being sprayed.

It's totally harmless to already growing plants so you'll need to use a herbicide on them to kill them. You can get Round Up in concentrate form and mix it for a large sprayer to cover a big area. Use the preemergent first and water it down. Next day use the Round up or other herbicide. Try to make sure it's a time that won't have watering or rain for a day to allow the hebicide to soak into the plants. It will wash off if you water or it rains too soon.

I hate gardening and am alergic to bermuda grass, the most common lawn in Arizona, So I killed everything in the yard and enjoyed the rock "garden" instead.

Your first option may be the best. Go with low-yeild, something less than a kiloton. You should be able to get a pretty good deal on the intardnet.

Won't kill the cockroaches tho.

Roundup (Glyphosate) is a great product but will only kill what's green and has essentially no residual.  It is a very safe product.  Be careful you don't walk where you just sprayed then walk across your lawn.  You can buy it cheap at a farm dealer or coop and it is not restricted use.  You can buy a clone product for probably about 15 bucks a gallon.  A 2 1/2 gallon jug will last for a long time.  If you buy the dilute crap they sell at the garden center you will pay many times that.

Paraquat/Diquat (brand names Gramaxone, Gramaxone Max, among others) is a great product but is restricted use and is a little dangerous to handle and apply.  Again, there is no residual activity with this product.  If you want to see things instantly hosed you can't beat it.

Piclorum is the active ingredient in products such as Tordon 22k.  It is restricted use but I believe a version of it is available commercially as Tordon RTU (ready to use).  This is a dilute overpriced product.  Tordon, if you can obtain it, has good residual activity but is effective mostly on broadleaf weeds and woody plants.

All of the above products photodegrade and biodegrade and are environmentally sound.  I would personally avoid home brew soil sterilants (diesel fuel for instance).  Because you eventually might want to grow something there or you might wind up as a superfund site and be asked to ship that parcel of property away to a toxic waste site in dump trucks which can get spendy.

I would personally go with Glyphosate and just plan on applying it a few times through the season.

great summary Casca!  thanks!

I wish I knew something that had a decent residual effect since I'm not wild about constant maintainance...
