Many moons ago, when I was just a young lad, I saw a movie about tank warfare during World War II. In my entire life I've only seen it once, but it presented the dangers faced by American tankers against German armor in very realistic fashion.
In one of the opening scenes a Tiger held a roadblock against an advancing American tank force, knocking out Sherman after Sherman. It was finally destroyed by a single Sherman that slipped through the woods and slipped up on it's exposed flank.
In another scene, the same unit was traveling up a shallow river when it ran into an infiladed 88mm anti-tank gun. Same story as with the Tiger. A 75mm round from a Sherman's low-velocity gun eventually smashed through the earthen berm surrounding the gun and killed the crew.
Anyway, a desperate young tank crewman requested an interview with the unit's commanding general and asked for help in remedying the situation. The general assigned one of the new M-26 Pershings, which had just arrived in the theater, to the young tanker's unit.
To this day, I cannot remember the title of that movie...undoubtedly a little remembered or acclaimed "B" war flick...but I've always liked it for it's accurate representation of the tank war that raged in Europe.
