AH2 TOD and Air Combat movies

Here's an idea: In TOD it should be possible to set-up realistic , massive air battles. What about recording them, and then re-rendeding everything at high quality, add photorealistic sky and terrain, and you have a rendering of an air battle much more realistic than anything a CG artist could come up with.
This technique could be used for movies and documentaries.

Its more then that...

I have played on servers with 128 players.

Typically 40 / 50 per server.

That's more then you see in the CT. Since the maps are much smaller you have concentrations of combat much like the AH  main with must of the fighting in one or 2 sectors with out the stupid capture the flag land grab garbage.

But Lizking is talking about making movies. You can put as many AI in the air as your system can handle.

Why would just make stuff up?

Yeah, I am talking about the game as a movie maker.  I have filmed with 120+ planes in the air, including enough "actors" to do what needed to be done.

Search the net for "Il-2 movies", there are some spectacular ones out there.

Look for RC_Kedic's "Come with me".

"Last man Standing"

"I promise"

yeah but with AH you could put 500 people in the air at the same time.
you could then add the eye candy in post-processing.

Here is a little clip showing 17 bombers taking off.  There are another 20 "prop" planes on the runway, and 2 more groups of 18 bombers at other fields in the setup that eventually join to drop against a small town.  I think I have some screenshots of the mass, but it didn't work for video.

Kewl!

Nice work!

You are never fighting all 500 guys in AH at one time. They are spread out over the map.

You may suggest that even on a 50 man Il2 DF server that all the guys aren't fighting each other either but the good servers compact the objectives over a small area and only give one or 2 airfields per side. You can't help but run into a fight even on full difficulty settings and icons off.

The maps in AH2 are larger. Even the small (256 x 256) maps are much bigger. The large (512 x 512) maps the combat areas are no denser then in FB (depending on the server).

How many guys in the air isn't issue. Its how many guys you find in the fight and to fight are what makes any game fun...

AH is a great game as well. I have had many a great fight in both.

Il2 'eye-candy' isn't all that awe inspiring. Compared to the newer games out there IL2 isn't cutting edge even on Perfect settings.

I will say that in terms of 'flight sim' movies none of the current games can match Il2.

There's many an Il2 movie to prove that...

I am just talking about using game footage for movies.  It is hard to get more than 10 planes in one shot anyway, so plane limits are sort of moot.

As discussed in the opening post, Il-2 is an ideal movie maker.  That is not to say that AH or anything else can't be, but to this point, there is nothing remotely close for creating airplane movies.  The editor is powerful enough, and the options are robust enough to setup pretty good scenery for filming.

Speaking of Il2...how do I get into one of these 50+ games without already knowing a group of guys to fly with.  Say I log on one night and want some action...how do i go about joining a random game?

Hyperlobby

Most servers run their own TS (Teamspeak)  for vox.
