Requesting bare metal P-38J
« on: July 05, 2005, 05:57:58 PM »
Hi all =)

I've reworked my lines and rivets on my P-38 "template", and wish to try a J. I'd like to stick to metal for now. If the J comes out better than my L, I might re-submit my L with the fixes too (it's basically already done, but I don't know which I like better...) I figured, I'll let you all decide between the new and the old, and at the same time, have a 2nd fighter out there. =)

So, does anyone have a bare metal P-38J they'd like me to do (as well as some info so I could research?). If it's 475th, I'm sure Blix, Killn, and the crew would appreciate it. lol

A few I've posted before.  Maybe those 479th Raider types would like a silver bird to go with Little Edris.

Kinda wish someone would do this sharkmouthed 370th FG 38 too

And of course the MTO birds are under represented.  How bout these 82nd FG birds

or this 1st FG bird

Thats 8th, 9th and 15th AF's covered to go with all the 5th AF birds.  Not that I'm not partial to 80th Headhunters :)

Wow Guppy, once again you've got a plethora of information that I'm indebted to you for =) Thanks man!

I meant no offense on the 475th suggestion. I just happened to know they were a squad in real life and the game, and unfortunately, as much as I like WWII aircraft and history, my knowledge is not very high, so I didn't know/realize who else was out there. Please accept my humble apologies. =)

I think I'm DEFINITELY interested in doing Maloney's Pony. That thing is different enough, and I could really work on trying to get a neat metal effect through the color paint. I think that's my next project.

That sharkmouth one is awesome. SkyChimp, it's up to you. I'd like to do the sharkmouth P-38, especially since it's a baremetal J, AND it would go along with my sharkmouth "Moby Dick" B-24. Since I'll be doing Maloney's Pony first, you can take it if you'd like, but I really would like to have a chance at it. Your call man =)

Well, I'm going to do some reasearch on Maloney's.... see what I can find out about the noseart/squadron and stuff, and if all goes well, maybe even have a screenshot or two by Monday. Thanks all!

Dan,

How can you tell a G from a J from a L?  I look at these photos and I can't tell the difference.  Any pointers?

Hey Howitzer, I know you asked Dan, but let's see if I can help some.

The biggest difference between the G and the J/L is easy to see, once you know what to look for. Once the P-38 got to the J model, they completely redesigned the intake system for the engine, including making the air intakes under each engine much much larger. The older models have a much smaller air intake.

As far as between the J/L, I beleive there is a landing light on the leading edge of the left wing, that is visible on the L, but not the J. I'm not 100% certain on that one however.

You are right on the money...

The pre-J series P38 had a sloped intake, about 45 degrees and the J/L series had a 90 degree vertical intake, to explain it a little easier.
