SNAFU: a little history.. my father in law served in Destroyers in WWII, Pacific Theatre. His ships action record reads like the battle plan of the pacific.. almost every major engagement USS Chauncey was there. The Chief of the Boat told him a story about how his squadron of 11 destroyers, charging down the California Coast at flank speed on a foggy stormy night ran right up on the rocks at Point Honda.. stranding 7 of them hard aground, sinking two. With Chauncy's bow jamed between a cleft in the boulders on the beach, breakers all around her, the captain stormed onto the bridge and snapped to the OOD 'Situation?'

The OD replied.. 'Normal; sir. All ****ed up."

And that's where SNAFU comes from.

My Dad went to sea on a 300 ton freighter out of New Orleans to Argentina in the late 30s. He was 2nd mate, after being oiler and then fireman. He tried to keep the ship from running aground at Pernambuco, Brazil as 3rd mate on watch. Wasn't his job but he happened to step out of the wheelhouse and saw a reef ahead. Turned the ship so hard it knocked the capt out of bed and he was very p'od. 2nd mate lost his job and Dad was promoted.. They sailed the ship onto the beach for repairs that lasted one month. During that time he lived in an old Spanish fort amongst Indians. None of the crew wanted to leave when the time came, but they went on down to Buenos Aires. He did this work for a couple years.

He told me they listened to the Graf Spee battle on the radio during one of these voyages, and saw it upon arriving to Buenos Aires. He was in the middle of world war two.
