GPS and plotter combo
« on: July 08, 2005, 03:58:45 AM »
Hi everybody

im about to cave and get myself a GPS. Since i dont venture into the woods if i can help it im thinking about mounting a removable GPS/plotter on the boat. I still love my good old paper maps, but im getting abit frustrated with fiddelig with them on the limited space i have available behind the wheel.

Does anyon here have any experience with this model? http://www.garmin.com/products/gpsmap276c/#

There are so many to choose from but this didnt cost a fortune.

Yes,

I use it , For on the Boat, the Car and On the Bike, and I love it,
I have had it now about 6 months and it was well worth the money.
The only thing is the maps are a a bit $$$ but then again you get what you pay for.

Also I recomend to if you are going to use it for both Road & Water then you get 1@2 extra memory cards (256mb) for loading the extra maps etc....

Thx Heater!

Is it the exact same model too??

Im only gonna use it on the boat tho and i have seen that the maps are expensive, but i only need it for one area so thats ok.

a couple of questions..

1. When you buy the maps do you also get updates for free when availble or do you need to buy new maps when stuff is updated?

2. I guess i have to drill some holes and fit some sort of bracket on my boat, but when that is done, is it quick and easy to remove the unit itself? Im not gonna leave it sitting in the boat or else i may just as well give it away to the nearest thieving bastard.

Yes it's the 276C

For the Maps,

It's diffrent for each set of maps i.e. some upgrades are free some are not.

Depending on which mount you use, all of them have a quick release on the unit so that should not be a problem, On the boat I use the marine mount which I had to drill 3,  4mm holes to mount it.

Oh i see...

Is it very solid?

<-----
Even if my boat has a pretty deep V it does tend to leave the water if i hit the waves just right and at high speed.... when i land its usually with a bang if the hull doesnt hit the water right.

Are extra brackets expensive too? Would be nice to mount one on my dads boat too and maybe even on my father in-laws sailboat so i can bring it with me.

-edit- i found the price of the bracket and thats not too bad but i also see that there is a battery available! I thought it had to be connected to boats  battery. neat.

Yes the unit is solid, / water proof etc….

on the boat I have "bounced" a few times :) and no problems at all. as for the mounts they are not that bad price wise, here they are about € 50.00 each, as for the battery...depending on how bright you set the display and what extras you connect to the unit, i.e. depth finder etc.... on how long it will last, you can also wire it in to the 12 volt electric system on the boat without much trouble. then it will  charge the battery and run on the boat power,

I find the unit very flexible.

My newest "toy".
Nokia 6680 with GPS program; waiting to get me a  GPS Bluetooth receiver :)
Even with just the map-program it's nice to have; so far it has found every street I've searched and gives the shortest way on screen. This one doesn't give voice directions but next one will have "*****ing Betty" :)

Oh and boy that UMTS/3G is fast; 384kb/sec in a cellphone... Heh it's faster than some cheap ADSL lines in here :D

Well you can buy 6681 with almost 100€ cheaper; only things its missing are 3G (aka WCDMA aka UMTS) and low-res camera from front.

Cool comparison site for mobilephones (in Finnish only, sorry, but technical mumbojumbo is same all over the globe)

so that phone automaticly transmits the GPS coordinates to the phone company? i dont think so ;)

but if it did than that really doesnt matter anyhow around these parts. "big brother" needs  a court order to check anything regarding your movements, money transactions, phone calls or internet usage. and they dont get that unless they can proove to the court that you are up to no good.

did i take the bate properly bodhi ? :D

If you're using ANY cellphone the operator knows always where you are and in here police will need a court order to get that information.

Then again I really don't care; I have nothing to hide.

btw that has also saved few lifes when missing people aren't capable to call help for some reason but their phones are on.
