what happened to the water
« on: July 10, 2005, 04:54:17 PM »
does anyone even turn this feature on anymore?

i remember when ht first introduced it, it looked really good but now. not to mention that its hellish on the eyes at night too.

i turned it on for shets and giggles and was not impressed.

is ht still working on it or is this the finished product?

I run at 1024 textures and with the animated water effects, it doesn't look any different than the screenshot 68DevilM posted.  It's a frame rate killer down low so I've got it turned off.

Same for me, I have to turn it off or my frame rates are unplayable.  From what I understand its in the way the older Geforce cards handle the shading or something for the water.  The ATI cards with properly updated drivers should handle it without a fps drop, and the 6xxx Geforce cards should handle it ok too.  I'll just have to live without it until I can upgrade.  :)

I found the biggest problem to be that the animated water made judging distance to water hard / impossible.

I was going to the drink all the time as I had no time to check the gauges during combat.

Its a nice start, i think they have tried to make a nice water effect, without hogging system resources like IL2.  To me, it looks a little speckly, as though someone has gone across the horizon with the airbrush tool in MS Paint.

I know comparisons with IL2 are wrong, as these screens are taken on a monster machine running full settings, and AH is made to be a level playing field, but here we go: -

The white caps on water are less pronounced in IL2, especially in the picture taken from altitude.  With a bit more subtle detailing i think AH can get the perfect compromise between detail and performance - although i suspect water may be low on the "to do" list for HT atm ;)

I have a GeForce 6800 with latest drivers and the water looks the same to me as in the pic posted.  It also kills my fps.  I too have trouble judging where it starts so I keep it turned off.....

furball, is that from pacific fighters???

i bought the game a month ago thinking it looked cool but its just bloody annoying. the whole interface sucks balls, just like il2. they just have far too many controls, which means you cant fit them all on the stick or keyboard. ah has it perfect (the control layout) i think, but yeah, i gotta say that the graphics with il2/pacific fighters, especially the water in PF is amazing

I agree also with the distance problem from the water. Have plowed into the drink enough to decide on no more glitter.
