The Army Times write up http://www.armytimes.com/content/editorial/pdf/at_sniper071505.pdf identifies the weapon as a Dragonoff. Which I presumed to be a misspelled Dragunov. I believe most were 7.68x54. There were a few other calibers produced, but not very big numbers.

It's 7.62 caliber round and a 54mm long cartridge.

That's a big freaking round!

A bit more in detail about what happened afterwards, from someone who was there:

Quote
Gentlemen,

I was THERE when Tshederier got hit. We got both snipers and the van. Brought out the dogt team (Civilian guys, Dog name Rex. Coolest mutt I have seen here.) They left a civilian in the streets with his brains all over it.

The shooters were crying like little ******* before we even got em back to Liberty. Could NOT understand why anyone they shot was still alive, ESPECIALLY when they saw him hit the ground. I lost all sympathy for these **'ers that day. The "sniper" hit one of my guys a week earlier and it was all we could do to make sure both of them made into the FOB in one piece. Still, *******.......

Edited the quote a bit for some profanity.  I saw a pic of the guy's bruise - it's almost fist sized.  And right above the heart too - he is very fortunate the plate was there and did it's job.  The restraint shown by our guys here despite the fact that these aren't uniformed soldiers of another standing army is incredible.  Our professional soldiers at work.

More or less. The "x54" refers to the case length in millimeters. Yes, it's more or less equivalent to a 308 but closer to a 30'06. For comparison:

7.62 Nato (308 Win) = 7.62x51

Most combloc full-powered rifles (snipers) and general purpuse machine guns = 7.62x54

SKS and AK-47 series = 7.62x39
