was awsome.. better than I remembered. Noticed the C-47's were USAF rigs in arctic paint. Great flying scenes, low level flying was smooth and man; so, so majestic... pylon turns at 150 feet in a mountain enviornment; would have loved to have been on the flight deck of one of 'em.

Some outstanding character actors too.. andy devine, with his little 'grabber' tool.. the pinky finger probe from the jacket to adjust the trim wheel. James Arness towering over the dickwad Lt. LOL.

really glad I got to see it again.. a great book, a good flick.

That was a John Wayne movie I had never seen before. Very nice stuff there including shooting in a very cold place. I thought the shelter they built was great. When he mentioned the generator I was thinking that he was referring to a mule in the tail of the plane that they could have used to charge the batteries for the radio.

I loved the scene where Arness threw the hotel guy out the window and the roomate was keeping score. Did you see the roomate using an ice pick to break the ice in the water pitcher?
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

I saw one of those 'gibson girl' hand crank radios at a flea market many years ago.. shoulda bought it.

The movie really tapped into the 'fraternity' of pilots from the 30's.. real pioneers; a close-knit group. Earnest K Gann wrote some really great books. Most people today have a hard time grasping what a real feat it was to navigate, fly and maintain an aircraft; particularly in less than ideal conditions. A time when Committing Aviation was more than pushing buttons and supervising an electronics array.

Tomorrow night, same time.. the High and the Mighty. Another great Aviation Movie that's been 'lost' for 30 years.

This was a true story and a great film.

If you enjoyed it you have to read the book, "Fate is the Hunter".  If you enjoy books about aviation you will love "Fate is the Hunter".  I first read this story in this book.
