The right and wrong way to ask for help...
« on: July 17, 2005, 07:07:00 AM »
In case everyone doesn't know it, there is a wealth of information in the message boards here and in the file base on AH-Terrains. And there is both a right and wrong way to ask for help.

===Right Way===
Take a look at the top right corner of the message board. See that "Search" button? Using this first would be the right way. If you search for "Making Tiles" you'll find 45 messages dating back to 6/2000. If you search for "Making Objects" you'll find 43 messages dating back to 8/2000.

===Wrong Way===
Bypass this wealth of information and ask for help first. This forces people to re-type information that is most likely already there.

===Right Way===
Read the documentation on all of the programs. If there is something you don't understand, search the forums. If there's no answer to what you are looking for, then ask.

===Wrong Way===
Ask someone to make something for you because you don't understand how a program works. Very few people (if any) will answer this request in a positive manner.

I could go on and on with this, but I think those two examples say it all.

Now, the purpose of this message board is to share information between HT and other terrain makers. It serves it's purpose very well when used properly. Asking the same questions over and over again defeats the purpose of a message board that retains most, if not all of the messages ever posted.

The purpose of AH-Terrains was and still is, to serve as a repository of files that members of terrain building community wish to share with others. This includes tiles, objects, tutorials, terrains and programs. While it has a message board, that is not it's main function.

If you ask a question here and you discover the answer on your own, post what you found so everyone knows. If you're willing to share the result, or a tutorial on the subject upload it to AH-Terrains.
Most of the people you meet in life are like slinkies. Pretty much useless, but still bring a smile to your face when you push them down the stairs.

Sometimes I think I have alzheimers. But then I forget about it and it's not a problem anymore.
