I found out when I was searching fro that pic. :(  However, its not like I was responsible enough in 1976 to understand that it would be a classic today.

Thats a beauty.  Out here in WA state, U.S., there are alot of classic VW's with excellent body conditions.  We don't salt the roads since we rarely have snow, so everything stays in mint condition as long as the owners wash them once and awhile.

my grandmother had some pale blue VW thing back in the 70's, and it was used or older (probably 60's) i still remember the black vynil dash, heck the wole car.

it was kinda kitsch, and i was kind of hoping on buying it when i got older and she needed a new car. never got the chance.

anyway, the engine i think was in the back, it was a wagon type, but not like the one ripsnort posted, it was shorter.

anyone know what it was? cause i have no clue now, it's been 20+ years since i have seen it.

everyone who tells me how reliable and indestrutable they are also tells me how they can change and engine out in one in a new york minute.... usually in the same sentance.

I liked the looks and handling of the old Kharman Ghia. The same old engine but a lot more styling IMO.

Laz,

You don't like the VW's. That's ok but continuing to state it over and over makes you sound like beetle about guns.
DEFINITION OF A VETERAN
A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

yep when u have to change the dynamo or something else .
There is a big chance u have to get the engine out.
Otherwise u cannot repair it.

For repairs and work on the motor its not really in an ideal position.

U have to get it out.

so true.

I have not problem with guys likeing VW's but I can't imagine anyone saying that they are "reliable" unless we are using a whole new world of comparative data here.

what are we comparing them to?  Even modern motorcycles are more reliable.

I am not at all like "beetle" in this.  I am not trying to ban anything or even justify one... You are thinking of ralph nader I believe...

I don't think they are much as cars and would do all I could to save kids lives by telling them how dangerous they are and do everything I could to discourage a friend from buying one by telling him how unreliable they are.

Hehe.
The VW and reliable mixes like oil and water.
You can rely on them for one thing. To leave your butt sitting on the side of the road. :)

Mine floated. Away.

One day the tide came in, and the bug went out.

Coast Guard sank it. Said it was a menace to navigation.

I think they had the bug confused with my wife.

Next time she went to the store, she wore a life jacket.

She's a blonde. Whadja expect?

mine brought me home always and everywhere and still after 32 years old.

That means very unreliable.

safety? cars now are considered unsafe over 20 years.

Thats very relative. The aircooled VW club in holland is the biggest they all proof u can drive pretty safe in them.

Not to mention they have to be tested every to be allowed on the road.

Not unlike in the us where u can drive around in a rotten car.

And ive seen some driving wreckages in "Pimp ur Ride".
