Operation Flashpoint... WOOHOO!
« on: June 20, 2001, 05:24:00 AM »
Now this is the graphics WWIIOL should have had... what a kick arse game!

Just did a cool mission in it. Came out a forest to a road, I hear a tracked vehicle so I take cover (luckily I'm wearing a gillie-suit (spelling?)). A BMP pulls up besides two soviet troops who had been following a road.

Damn, I can't resist it... I pop the guy in the commanders turret, he slumps over dead. The gunner quickly pulls his head and the two troopers take cover near some woods. The BMP floors it and scarpers out of the area. Luckily the two troopers didn't get my position, I finish them quickly.

I jump up and run across the road for the woods... I can hear armour roaring up the road behind then a huge BANG. I just about crap myself as I dive down. Christ a T-80 is hunting me. It skirts the woods, crushing the smaller trees on the edge making a hell of a racket. I sit tight, he can't see me. I wait, damnit, another BMP turns up to help the T-80. I can hear troops up on the road. I edge south out of the woods, into bushes, crawling all the way...

Man this game has got ATMOSPHERE and I don't need 512Mb's to run it.

Mark my words... it may not be netbased yet - but just LAN games will be nirvana.

Heh, and I haven't even gone for a ride in a Blackhawk yet  :)

I especially like the advanced damage modelling...'life bar' á la the average side scrolling shooter from '85.  ;)

But really, it's an enjoyable game, even with its relaxed physics model.

Yeah OFP rocks, but it will never replace WW2OL. Even when they implement dedicated server support, with perhaps 30 people max like Half Life, nothing beats WW2OL.

There's noting like flying from Cambrai to Dinant, and passing several tank battles, trucks ont the road, infantry and at-guns in the trees, and of course passing numerous other planes on your way, and finally get to your destination and engage in a huge furball with ground battle beneath you.

But I love OFP too. It will be some great infantry battles ala Rogue Spear type fighting.

I just finished testing it for a review here in Spain... this game definitely rocks.

The European version looks a bit rushed... no russian missions or campaign, some small flaws in HW acceleration with T&L, and the netcode still needs some optimization.

The good news for all you US guys is that the US version will have better netcode and dedicated server support (and a patch for european users  ;) )

So far I've played 4 player coop via TCP-IP and it ran quite well (some small jumps when driving a jeep).

As for the relaxed flight mode... what can I say. It's true, but since there's no joystick support as of now, my guess is that the flying aspect of the game will eventually improve.

Flying an UH-60 NOE or looking for targets in an A10 is really an experience  :)

I could tell some stories that sell the game themselves... for instance the other day I was in a Shilka and a Cobra got me with 2 TOWs, so both the driver and I had to disembark. I saw my driver running for the trees and I thought "what the..." and sure enough, the Cobra turned around for another pass, saw me, and I was history"  :)

Definitely one of the best games I've played in a long time.

PS: If you have questions about the game, don't hesitate to ask. My copy is valid another 20 days, so I'll make the most of them (until I got my retail copy, that is  ;) )

I agree that FP is a g-r-e-a-t game, period.

However, I dread the word 'rushed' for obvious reasons...I hope we can download an upgrade to make the euro version on par with the US version...

I was going to preorder OFP but will now wait until they get things cleared up and optimized.  I've been reading about that netcode, and it appears they kinda just slapped that in there at the last moment.  Since I'm only interested in online play, I don't think the Euro release is for me. 4 player with warps... I'll wait.

Vulcan, sent you a private message.

That's for sure...

Another advantage the US users will have is that by September you'll be able to find zillions of great user-made missions both for offline and online play thanks to the great mission editor that is bundled with the game.

About the netcode... well, having experienced Counter Strike lag/warps, AH lag/warps, etc... I don't think that the "jumps" I saw were warps, just some sloppy coding when rendering the next frame of the jeep when it's turning.

When flying or as a soldier on foot I didn't see those jumps.

Still, if you live in the US, I would advise to wait for the September release, you'll have a more polished product by then.

One great thing about OF is that you don't experience that "oh, but it's just computer AI" feeling that you get after playing online games, and that's one reason to buy it if now if you live in Europe. And the 8 player multiplayer mode. And the mission editor.  :)

OH...MY...GOD...

Thats so fukin ironic, I'd have to slap 3 dozen guys in AH that said that about WWIIOL.

Does anyone else maybe, just find the comments from the "WWIIOL head-giving cheerleader, fscot" a bit kinda tarded?   :)
