I suspect that the XVF-12 was actually part of a cunning plan to feed the Chinese misinformation about the design of VTOL aircraft.

So cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a mandarin.

At least that would be a better excuse than anything I have yet seen to explain the abominable XVF-12...
