I've got my Truck camper stocked with beer and burgers for those practices after work (for me! :p)

Had a nice little post in responce but lost it when I hadta reboot cause my mouse locked up for some reason.

To summerise.

His playing time will depend more on him and how well he progresses. He may pick it right up.

Coaches typically will go with performance over experiance so as long as he is well diciplined does what the coaches want him to do and likes to crash into things as hard as he can he'll do just fine  :)

Also there is the minimum play rule. Each kid has a minimum amount of playing time depending on the size of the team. The fewer kids on the team the larger the minimum play time the kids get. And vise verse.
The absolute minimum I know used to be 3 plays for a full squad.

The bigger kids usually play the line. Usually, but there are exeptions
I had one kid was one of the smallest kids on the team but he was phenominal on defencive line. Absolutely lightning quick off the ball did everything we asked of him right the first time. VERY intence player. I used to joke with his father that he was going to grow up to be either a superstar or a psychopath. LOL
Good kid though.

But he was the exeption so unless your kid is in that larger catagory he should get to play  his position

I'm betting linebacker on D and possibly either a back or end on offence

LOL those 5 days are fun. Dont be surprised during the season that on top of the 3 nights of practice saturday mornings are thrown in too.

With beer and burgers you should be very popular among the other fathers.

If your going to work with your kid on your own time. Work on whatever the coaches are working with him on. Or better yet ask the coaches what you can work with him on.

Just be on the same page as the coaches and dont develop your own program or you could hurt more then help him.

Things you can do now to help give him a leg up is teach him things like the positions, the holes maybe some agility & footwork drills
Running forwards, sideways & backwards without falling down.
that sort of thing
Theres alot of stuff out there Im just throwng this up for example

Footballdrills.com

Most of all. just let him have fun and dont let him get discouraged.
From the looks of him I think he'll do fine:aok

Yep that first time in pads is funny time to watch those kids. After they get popped by someone who has played before a few times they finally start figuring out what it takes.

Similar to what Dred says two seasons ago we had a 5 year old that came out to play and he weighed all of 40 pounds but we put him onthe defensive line once we realized no one could touch him. That season he had 14 1/2 sacks and 26 1/2 tackles for loss. I say 1/2 because alone he could not put anyone down but generally he held on long enough for someone else to get in and lay the wood to them.

Oh and when teaching him to block forget all that old school stuff about forearms and chicken wing blocking. Get him to using his hands and in the long run he will thank you for it. Just make sure he stays in tight on the chest and not on the shoulders. Its all in the technique.

get him some gloves and some eye black and he's good to go. :aok

tell him good luck!

D Line is da bomb fer sure.

He may want to check on the eye black. Some programs dont allow it.

Oh and since he's in the northwest. He should run out ASAP and pick up a HotHead For when it starts getting cold. Which I am assuming happens pretty early up there.

Super warm and super thin so it fits right under the helmet without having to adjust the fit.

My old coach use to call it the dolphin phin instead of chicken wing. He was missing a finger and he would give us numbers on the plays so when he said 2 he would put 1 and 1/2 fingers up, confused the hell out of us. He was kind of crazy, i hope he don't play this game

If only I had known I could have used my hands when blocking in high school for something other than cheerleaders boobs and catching footballs. I definetely would have gotten a better scholarship offer. :D

don;t know where you played,. but it was illegal to use hands while blocking in my HS league.

you'd get a personal foul, and a second offense, ejected from the game..... then have a coach never want to play you again.

something about injuries or something. don't know the whole reason.

It wasn't illegal it just was not taught at the high school level in the late 80's. I graduated from high school in 1989 and the first thing I learned that fall in college was to forget about forearm blocking and use my hands. It took a long to time realize that it was better. However on defense they always taught us to use our hands and play off the blocker that way. Hell theres no telling how many sweeps I could have gotten the DE turned back inside in high school to get the back on the corner faster.

Now its a very common teaching point that starts in peewee football to punch block with an open hand and "hold" inside the shoulder pads.
