ok, I'm open for suggestions on this.

I just bought an ATI X800XL. But my FPS is worse than my old ATI9700 AIW.

Why is this? With all I read about the newer cards, I figured this would have increased my FPS greatly.

My system specs:

Alienware area 51
3.06 HT GHZ P4
1024 RDRAM
audigy 2
60GB HD

I am using the newest Cat drivers, and with everything at default in the sim and just quality settings on the card, FPS are in the 20's

I dont get it.....Did I get the wrong card??

Any suggestions? I'm thinking of pulling it out and taking it back.

Thanks

I got same card.  My fps is around 25-100.  I think between the 2 cards, the 800xl uses more features then the 9700.  What I mean is different rendering techniques like shaders and stuff like that which actually puts more strain on the processor which in turns slows the computer down.  Just a guess.  Really the process's should be all done on the GPU not CPU but in actuality I see it being done by the CPU here in this game.  Other games it seems to use the GPU more so then the CPU.

I have a AMD 64 3200+ and I got my sliders to the left except for object detail which is 50%.  I also using 4x AA.

Elyeh, you want to make sure your vid card settings are not slowing you down.  Also, what texture sizes are you using?

I just picked up the same card couple days ago..used to have 9700 pro.

I am quite happy with cards performace, solid FPS and doesnt get lower then 25-30fps at most graphically intense situations.

comp Specs

P4 2.6c
1GB DDR
X800 XL AGP

AH graphics setup:

2X Anti Aliasing
2X anistropic filtering
Mipmap detail to max
1280X1024 resolution
512 Texture size
In game graphics detail at about 2/3.
Animated water off

oh yea and latest catalyst drivers.

What are your settings?

Its a good card no doubt. Maybe you're just expecting too much.

Sys
3.06 HT alienware (area 51)
1024 DRAM
350w power supply
60GB 7200rpm HD

I'm set at 128 in the Bios
512 texture in the game
2xAA
2xAF
sliders at default except for detail....about 3/4 to the left
Vsync on
smartshader  no effect
1024x768 resolution and 85hrz refreash rate.
16 bit color    Catalyst 5.6 drivers

Maybe I am expecting too much lol
Its just that with my 9700 I very rarely got screen stutter(even in a furball with the base on fire)
with the 800xl it seems to happen more often.

Question... I've never updated my bios (flash) or updated the board chipset. Its all the original fom when I got the system. (about 2 yrs ago)

will this effect the newer card?

Thanks for the help so far

Couple of things I see there Elyeh.  1 your power supply is pretty small or low power for that setup.  U should have at least a 400W true power or more.  2 the AF setting doesn't really make a difference in this game.  I turned mine off and just use 4x Temporal AA.  I found I gained performance by installing AH on my second hardrive vers having it on system hardrive.  I also keep the AH directory towards the begining of the hardrive using my defrag program.

BTW I have my system process's down to 16 when I enter the game which total's out to 17 when game is running.  Don't add task manager process as that goes away after U close it.  U should use a SATA HD if your system has the controller.

My game settings are as follows:

1280x1024 32 color
512 texture size
Object detail is 50%
Object size and range is all the way to the left (100%)

Graphic card settings:
5.7 catalyst drivers
4x temporal AA
AF is set to application preference
texture preference is set to high quality
Mipmap detail level is set to High quality
V-sync is application preference
truform is application preference
smartshader is off

Computer specs:
480W true power (antec)
AMD 64 3200+ running at 2.22ghz
Nforce 3 250 chipset (Asus K8N-E deluxe mb)
1 gig DDR 400 ram
2 x 80 gig SATA drives (not in raid)
Soundblaster Audigy 2zs
ATI XT800XL 256 meg
19" Ultrabrite A91f+ viewsonic monitor
Sony DVD
Sony DVD-rw double layer
1000/100/10 network card

With these specs I get anywhere from 25- 100 FPS.

On the BIOS Update, its possible.  I'd look into what updates are available, and read what they fixed.  BIOS is one of those "if it aint broke dont fix it" kinda things.

Question.........

Why are you running 16 bit color?

Suggestions...........

I would definitely make sure you have all the latest drivers for your motherboard hardware.

Try turning AA and AF to application pref.

Which control panel are you using?  Make sure the Catalyst Control center is not installed.  Eats resources.  Just use the basic ATI control panel.

What is Texture Quality set at?

Leave Smartshader to "no effect"

Make sure check ON "Support DXT Texture Formats"

Make sure check OFF "Force Z-Buffer depth"

Try using Triplebuffer, unless it causes problems.

If these suggestions do not help, try rolling back to a previous driver and try again.

I use 16 bit vs. 32 as there is no noticable difference and is easier on the graphics. I'll have to check on the c.c.c. I'm sure its installed as I installed the whole driver package.

I'll uninstall it if it is in fact currently installed.

As far as chipset drivers, how do you know which ones to download and use??
I have an asus board with a Nivida chipset (nforce 2.0 win/xp).

Do they install right over the exsisting ones?

Thanks for the the help

You will want to determine the exact motherboard you have.  Go to the Asus website http://usa.asus.com/index.htm and do a search for your motherboard (the identifier should be printed on the motherboard; alternately, you can download a program like SiSandra from SiSoftware (get the "lite" version, its free) and have it tell you the motherboard).  You will see BIOS updates, motherboard drivers, etc.

Heres a link to the page that tells you how to find what model motherboard you have.

intel 3.2
1gig ram
intel board
x800
clocked to 426 and 460mem
cpu o/c 3.43

High quality settings and 1200x960
1024 texture size
distance views maxed out
85hz refresh on old viewsonic 19"

36-107fps no matter whats on the screen. pretty much all smoke and 20 con furballs its running at around 45-60fps high alt fights always above 80fps
goes down to 36fps diving near trees with nothing else in view.

only thing weird i find is the fps in the tower is always 15-17 for whatever reason.

omega drivers.

if i got this 800 and it did less than 45fps in a furball I would have returned it, since my old 9800pro128 with lead paste volt increase did near that already.

which omega drivers are you using?
